According to Matt Ehalt, the Mets are promoting Seth Lugo. The right-hander is having a tough time in his first full season in the PCL. Lugo has gone 3-4 with a 6.55 ERA in 19 games (13 starts).
Lugo was the Mets 34th round pick in the 2011 draft and worked his way up in the organization in recent years. Over his minor league career Lugo has gone 28-22 with a 4.26 ERA.
Lugo started this season in the rotation and was moved to the bullpen after his start on the 5th of June. He has made some spot starts after moving to the bullpen. As a reliever Lugo has been better, he’s has allowed four runs in nine innings out of the pen.
Lugo has not been great this season but he still owns a good four pitch arsenal. His fastball tops out at 94 MPH as a starter but has been clocked at 96 MPH in his relief outings. He likes to throw a two-seam fastball to go with his curve which is his best pitch. Baseball America named Lugo his curveball as best in the Mets system before this season.
At MMN we ranked Lugo as our #12 prospect before the season started:
Lugo was added to the Mets 40-man roster this offseason after having a breakout season in 2015 combined between the Binghamton Mets and Las Vegas 51s. He went 8-7 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and he struck out 127 batters in 136 innings in 2015.
The Mets needed a pitcher who can give you innings out of the pen. Lugo provides that and he is a better pitcher than his numbers in the PCL have shown.
Well hey whether its for verrett or gilmartin its worth a shot. Hes on 40man anyway. If he hits 95-96 with a sweet curve I assume will actually curve outside the PCL why not.
I think he will be just fine in the Bigs, more upside than Verrett/Gil/Sean and even Martin.
