After a few weeks of being away, I am finally back into full writing swing, and with a recap for the Cyclones. I attended the ‘Clones game tonight and sat behind the player’s guns a few seats from directly behind the front seats of the plate. I saw gun readings as they came in for both teams. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a proper scout sheet, so I made a makeshift one that I’d rather not show to you all, or else you’ll see my horrendous handwriting (worse than doctors, Mind you). But I made a few notes about some things…Here’s my recap:

Cyclones beat the Lowell Spinners 3 – 0 today. Miller Diaz got the start and was wonderful in his five innings of work, striking out eight, while walking three, and giving up 2 hits.

His fastball was around 90 to 94 miles per hour with not too much life, (but you don’t exactly need that in the NYPL). In his last inning, the 5th, Diaz touched 94 after hitting a few 93’s and 92’s earlier in the game. At first, his slider flashed below average, but as innings picked up, so did his slider, resulting in at least four of his eight strikeouts. It gathered depth and bite as the game went on. His changeup was good, not great. He started to lose steam in the 5th with a couple of walks, but found his way out with his 8th K.

Brooklyn scored in the fourth on a single by Alex Sanchez, scoring Juan Carlos Gamboa after Cleluis Rondon had an errant throw to first. After that, L.J. Mazzilli scored on an RBI single from Center Fielder Jorge Rivero.

David Wynn came into the game in the 6th and pitched a scoreless frame. He threw from 86 to 90 miles per hour with an interesting curveball with a lot of break attached to it, coming in around 76 miles per hour. He seems like a future LOOGY to me.

Ricky Knapp came into the game in the 7th, and wasn’t too impressive. He was in the 91-93 range with no noticeable breakers. He found himself negotiating his way through two innings, giving up two hits, and walking one.

The Cyclones found their way onto the board again in the 8th, when senior signee Patrick Biondi walked, stole 2nd base, and scored on a sac fly by L.J. Mazzilli, after Juan Carlos Gamboa singled him over to 3rd base.

Afterwards, Shawn Teufel came into the game and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. He earned his second save. He is so intriguing because he’s at a sidearm slot, with so much movement on his fastball. The fastball however, sat at 84 miles per hour. Teufel is currently working in Brooklyn as a rehab assignment.
