Iowa 6, Las Vegas 5

On Tuesday night, in the second game of the visiting Las Vegas doubleheader against the Iowa Cubs, the 51s were swept in a heartbreaking 6-5 loss in a 7-inning game. D.J. Mitchell started for the 51s and was hammered for five earned in four innings while giving up seven hits. He walked three while striking out three as well.

The Iowa Cubs struck early against Mitchell, scoring in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Dave Sappelt, scoring Brent Lillibridge. They then tacked on two more runs in the third – scoring on a single by Sappelt, and a double by Darnell McDonald scoring Sappelt. Two innings later, the I-Cubs scored two more runs on another RBI double by McDonald, and then a bases-loaded walk by Greg Peavey to the opposing pitcher, Barrett Loux.

Then the 51s’ bats woke up, scoring five runs in the sixth inning. It started with Landon Powell reaching on a fielding error by second baseman Brent Lillibridge. Followed by that, Colin Cowgill flew out, and Kirk Nieuwenhuis walked. Omar Quintanilla drove in Powell with a double, and then Josh Satin walked to load the bases with one out. Zach Lutz came through in the clutch with a single, scoring Niewenhuis and Quintanilla. Jamie Hoffmann then struck out, but Reese Havens reached base to load the bases again.Brian Bixler responded to the situation well, singling in Satin and Lutz to tie the game at 5-5.

But where there was hope, it quickly dwindled away as Gonzalez Germen gave up a home run to Brian Bogusevic that flew over the centerfield wall. The 51’s went down in the seventh fairly quietly to lose the game 6-5.
