MMN Game Recap 5/7: Ynoa Dominates, Urena Collects Four Hits

Las Vegas 2 (14-14), Sacramento 1 Box Score

The 51s scored two runs in the third inning on a Dilson Herrera RBI single and T.J. Rivera sac fly which would be all the Las Vegas pitching staff needed. Herrera went 2 for 3 with a walk, run scored, stolen base, and the run driven. The lone hit for for Rivera extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Ty Kelly went 2 for 4 and is second in the Pacific Coast League with his .388 average. Brandon Nimmo went 1 for 4 with his second stolen base while Gavin Cecchini was given the night off.

Gabriel Ynoa was fantastic again for the 51s picking up his third straight win (3-0) while lowering his ERA to 1.91 which is second in the league behind only Dodgers phenom Julio Urias. He pitched seven innings allowing one run on four hits and one walk, with two strikeouts. He retired 14 for 15 batters at one point and is holding opponents to a .195 average.

Josh Smoker came in with a runner on in the eight inning, retiring the three batters he faced with two of them coming via swinging strikeouts. He now has six consecutive scoreless appearances lowering his ERA to 3.18 and has struck out 20 batters in 11.1 innings.

The rehabbing Josh Edgin pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up the save, he struck out two and threw a couple of nasty sliders. He hasn’t even allowed a hit over his last 6.1 innings and has allowed just two overall in 7.1 on the comeback trail. In that span he has struck out ten compared to only two walks.

Las Vegas plays the River Cats again tonight with Sean Gilmartin (3-1, 2.70) on the mound for the 4:05 PM ET start. It is Gilmartin’s 26th birthday!

Akron 2, Binghamton (14-12) 1 F/11 Box Score

The two teams combined to go 0-15 with runners in scoring position with all three of the runs coming on solo homers. Nellie Rodriguez hit his seventh of the year in the top of the 11th for the deciding factor in the game. Dominic Smith lead off the bottom half of the inning with a single but Xorge Carrillo grounded out to end the game.

B-Mets ace Robert Gsellman threw six good innings, he allowed one run on six hits (solo homer to Indians #1 prospect Bradley Zimmer) and one walk while striking out three. He didn’t have his best stuff and had only one clean inning but still lowered his ERA to 1.77 and WHIP to 1.01. He consistently 92-94 MPH with his fastball with a few 95’s mixed in.

Luis Mateo struck out two in his scoreless frame, now has thrown six scoreless appearances in a row. Akeel Morris pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts and hasn’t allowed a run since April 21st.

Victor Cruzado crushed his third home run of the year in the second inning to right field and was 2 for 5 on the day. The only other B-Met with multiple hits was Niuman Romero who went 2 for 5 with three strikeouts.

Andrew Barbosa (1-0, 3.12) looks to help Binghamton get back in the win column Sunday at 1:05 against Akron.

St. Lucie (16-13) 15, Fort Myers 5 Box Score

This game was over early as the Mets scored four runs in the first inning and six in the third than added six in the fifth inning for good measure. Every St. Lucie starter had at least one hit and one run scored. Jhoan Urena was 4 for 5 with his fourth double and scored two runs.

The big hit of the night came from Michael Katz who hit a three-run homer in the first inning for his first of the season. He knocked in four total on the night and had two hits. Wuilmer Becerra had hits in his first two at bats that pushed his average up to .430 before getting retired in his final three at bats. He was 2 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and knocked in two. He is now hitting .415 on the season and has a 12-game hitting streak.

Amed Rosario was 2 for 5 with a walk, double, two RBI and two runs scored. He is now hitting .328 on the season and has nine hits over his last five games. Luis Guillorme reached base three times (1 for 3, two walks) while knocking in three runs and hitting just his second double of the season.

St. Lucie starter Scarlyn Reyes (1-4) picked up his first win of the season, he allowed five runs on ten hits in seven innings which lowered his season ERA to 8.37. Jimmy Duff and Robert Coles each tossed a scoreless inning to finish out the victory.

The St. Lucie Mets have mother’s day off and are back at it on Monday when they host Jupiter with Casey Delgado (4-0, 2.67) on the mound.

Columbia 5, Greenville 0 Suspended 5th inning

The game was suspended because of stadiums light in left field that went out. They will resume the game at 2 PM with the regular scheduled game to be played afterwards.
