While the story about how Jordany Valdespin was told about his demotion to Triple-A Las Vegas is a little foggy, his play with the 51s has been anything but that. He’s been white-hot since he was inserted into the lineup by manager Wally Backman. He earns this week’s MMN player of the week award by hitting .500 with one home run, three doubles, seven runs scored, 10 RBIs, six walks, and only one strikeout.
The left-handed hitter brings home even more hardware, as he is also today’s player of the week in the Pacific Coast League.
Valdespin was basically wasting away on the bench in the big leagues with decreased playing time thanks to the outfield being set, while Omar Quintanilla and Daniel Murphy were playing virtually every inning in the middle infield. Through 133 at-bats (66 games played), JV1 was hitting .188/.250/.316 with four home runs and 16 RBIs.
While his week has been incredible, his entire body of work in 11 games with the 51s is just eye-popping. He’s hitting .500/.560/.818 with two home runs, 21 RBIs, and 11 runs scored. In his last ten games, he’s registered six multi-hit games (two games of four hits), three games of more than one run scored, and five games of more than one RBI. He’s driven in at least one run in nine of his last ten games, including his last seven in a row.
When he was demoted a couple weeks ago, it looked as though he may not be seeing the majors again for the rest of 2013; his latest evidence of immaturity likely could have been the last straw with the organization. However, his hot streak in Triple-A could do one of two things: it could make the management reconsider, or rise his trade stock at the right time, if a team is willing to deal with him.
We’ll see what happens with Valdespin moving forward, but it’s always interesting with JV1 in the mix, isn’t it?
LoL….No surprise here, he’s playing like Yasiel Puig in the PCL since his demotion. Just wished the Mets did a better job handling him.
At the very least he wouldve been a trade chip if they didnt sully his reputation publicly. But dealt with it in a more private manner. Ive read how great a job Texas does when it comes to overrating there prospects and getting others around the league to buy in…Well the Mets do the opposite.
They said this new regime would be different from the last but they handled this situation poorly.
Lets say Valdespin was a terror in the clubhouse[which I doubt, I think he might just be a jerk at most] a veteran clubhouse wouldnt allow a Valdespin whom doesnt even have a full season under his belt to cause such a stir nor get his antics publicity via the media.
Matter of fact a real good front office wouldve nipped this in the bud a long time ago by just demoting him. And the only excuse they would need when asked was, “Jordany needs to go down and work on being a professional”(PERIOD)…Not punishing him by letting the opposing team have target practice with him or burying him on the end of the bench. Im sure he was happy receiving that major league check and the perks that comes with being a major leaguer most minor leaguers dont sniff that life.
The Mets attempted to ruin the kid by keeping him cold for the better part of the year because they dont like the kid and his personality.Where most teams would get the best out of him and trade him away for a useful piece rather than just attempt to stall/ruin his career.
SAME OLE METS!!!
Apparently Tejada or Valdespin wont see the majors til September no matter what they do…barring an injury of course….
Im not surprised about Spin but I at least thought Tejada would unseat Quintanilla whom has struggled badly. Another dumb move by Collins…IMO…you dont put stuff like this out there you let the guys compete to get promoted dont deflate them by emphatically stating they wont get the callup no matter what they do smh…way to dangle that carrot TC you idiot
You are talking as if Collins cares about these two. He is allowed by the front office to act like that. I cannot think of too many teams that would stand for his lack of professionalism. Maybe KC, Houston, Miami…losers. Hence, we have the mentality of a team which lacks professionalism. Is it Alderson only? Does Wilpon play a role?
