20100317_jmejia_250x375It was only a few years ago that Jenrry Mejia was considered the Mets top prospect. The hard throwing righty ranked in Baseball America’s top 100 prospects in 2010 and 2011, and it appeared that he had a very bright future in the organization. Since then, Mejia has suffered numerous injuries and setbacks, which have stalled his career. His name has stopped coming up in conversations about Mets’ young starting pitching, but that’s all about to change. Mejia is recovered from his injuries, and is currently fighting his way back to the major leagues. His outstanding start this Saturday in AA earns him this week’s MMN pitcher of the week honors.

Mejia dominated the New Britain Rock Cats in his second start for the Binghamton Mets on Saturday. Mejia yielded only one run and three hits through six innings while striking out eight. The only run he allowed was a home run in the fifth inning by Nathan Hanson. The win was Mejia’s second of the season.

Mejia could make his Mets debut this season as early as this weekend. With all the setbacks he’s suffered, it’s easy to forget how talented Mejia is, and it’s also easy to forget that he’s still only 23 years old. His comeback is fantastic news to the organization since he has the ability to be a key contributor either as a starter or as a reliever.

In two starts with the B-Mets, Mejia is 2-0 with a 0.89 ERA, allowing six hits, four walks and striking out nine hitters in 11 innings pitched.

Congratulations to Jenrry on this honor! Maybe he’ll get to celebrate by making a start in Flushing this weekend.
