MMN Pitcher Of The Week: Matt Fox

By Former Writers

If I told you that Matt Fox was the best pitcher in our organization last week, would you believe it? Don’t worry, I’m not a liar… I’ve got the numbers to back me up. Mr. Fox made two starts last week with similar results — six shutout innings in both starts. In fact, his line for the week over two games started was 12.0 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 9 K. He earned the win in his first start of the week. Fox has been solid most of the time since he had been signed actually — a few bad starts have messed up his ERA, but he usually gives the 51s a good change to win.

In his last eight starts, he has gone six innings in seven of them, including his last four in a row. Fox was added through waivers to fill the Triple-A rotation with the promotion of Carlos Torres and Zack Wheeler — and considering that Torres was simply a depth signing in the offseason, you can never really count signings of these calibers out. Fringe players like Fox are playing for their livelihoods — they need a job with a team somewhere and it doesn’t hurt to take an MiLB flyer on them. Of course, Fox is one of ours, so I only wish him the best of success.

Fox was a former first-round pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2004, and has seen time in the MLB with the Twins and the Red Sox. To be completely honest, his likelihood of playing with the Mets at all this season is low, but you can’t count anything out with the ever shifting door at the major league level and the chance for injuries.

Congratulations to Matt Fox for a great week, and hope you can keep it up!
