robert gsellmanWith young pitchers like Chris Flexen, Robert Whalen and Miller Diaz enjoying standout seasons for Kingsport and Brooklyn, the Mets currently possess many intriguing pitching prospects in the low minors. In recent weeks, another young pitcher is also starting to garner a lot of attention due to his excellent performance. Robert Gsellman, who the Mets drafted out of West Chester High School in Los Angeles, is having a tremendous run of success for the Brooklyn Cyclones. Gsellman delivered two outstanding performances this week, and he owns a 1.60 ERA  and a 0.92 WHIP for Brooklyn this season.

Gsellman tossed 15 shutout innings in two spectacular starts this week for the Cyclones. In his first start against the Vermont Lake Monsters, Gsellman struck out five and yielded only five hits and a walk over seven scoreless innings. Gsellman was phenomenal again in his next start, striking out 13 batters while only surrendering two hits and a walk in eight innings.

For the season overall, Gsellman is 6-5 with a 2.31 ERA 1.07 WHIP and has struck out 78 in 105 innings pitched.

The emergence of the right-hander gives the Mets another promising young pitcher to keep tabs on going forward. The 19-year-old hurler is a very talented athlete, and he has a bright future in the Mets organization.

Thoughts from Matt M.:

This was a solid pick from Vinny; it seems as though it’s always a tough decision for him to pick just one pitcher who had the best week of all. However, it’s a good problem to have, and as we can see at the big league level, a team can never have enough pitching. I’ve been impressed with Gsellman’s performance in Brooklyn, but his overall performance through three different levels of the minors has also been something worth noting. He started two games for St. Lucie, posting a 3.00 ERA, while he started five for Savannah, compiling a 3.72 ERA.

Having him pitch before Brooklyn’s season got underway has helped him build his workload up to 105.1 innings pitched, which sets him up nicely to get closer to full seasons of work moving forward.
