Steven Matz was absolutely dominant in his April 17th start on the road against the Fort Myers Miracle. The Long Island native’s sparkling performance could not have come at a better time after Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen compared his stuff to two time Cy Young award winner Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mr. Matz tossed seven innings of two hit ball while walking one and striking out 6. He picked up his first win of the season and lowered his ERA to 2.00 in the process. He improved his K:BB ratio to 5.57:1 (17 K: 3 BB) and his K/9 to 8.5.

The 22-year old lefty is clearly opening some eyes and it’s only a matter of time before he is promoted to AA Binghamton this season. He currently features a fastball that sits in the low to mid 90’s, a solid changeup and a developing curveball. If Matz can improve his curve between now and the middle of the 2015 season, it’s very plausible he could get a shot with the big club around that time. I ranked Matz # 10 on my preseason MMO Top 25 Mets Prospects and stand firm on that ranking. He’s on the fast track to climb a significant amount of spots on next year’s top 25 prospects and Mets fans should keep a close eye on this kid because he’s one of the special ones.
