Congratulations to catching prospect Kevin Plawecki for being named the MMN Player of the Week for his performance from May 5 – May 11.

Plawecki, 23, ended the month of April batting just .250, with no home runs and three runs batted in, but when the calendar changed to May, he started to heat up.  On May 2, Plawecki was 2 for 4, with two runs scored and a double and hasn’t stopped hitting since.  He is currently enjoying an eight game hitting streak with five multi-hit games within that span and also hit his first home run of the season on May 8th.

Plawecki is currently batting .298/.333/.420, with 12 runs scored, seven doubles, home run, eight RBI’s and four walks. He is second on the team in hits (27), doubles (7), and third in slugging (.420).

Not only is Plawecki hot with the bat, but his defense has been amazing. Our B-Mets Beat Writer John Bernhardt watched Plawecki over past week and came away totally impressed with how the young catcher plays the position.  “It was Plawecki’s work behind the dish that had me shaking my head in wonderment,” says John Bernhardt.

Plawecki has proven during his minor league career, that he can hit and do whatever it takes to help the team win and this season is no different as he is getting hot at the right time and showing Mets fans that he too is a catcher worth watching on the Farm.

Honorable Mention:

Jayce Boyd, 1B/DH – Binghamton Mets

Boyd had a great week as well and if not for Plawecki’s hot streak, Boyd may have won this weeks honors, but either way he needs to be mentioned. At the end of April Boyd was batting just .182, with no home runs and seven RBI’s, but just like Plawecki, as soon as the calendar turned to May, he found his hitting shoes and has turned his season around.

May 5-May 11: .444 (8 for 18), 7 R, 3 doubles, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB

Dominic Smith, 1B/DH – Savannah Sand Gnats

Smith, who is just 18 years old, is another top prospect that struggled through April when he batted just .217; but only to see his bat heat up as soon as May arrived. From May 3 – May 9, he enjoyed a six game hit streak and had five multi-hit games in that stretch.

May 5-May 11: .391 (9 for 23), 4 R, 2 RBI

Brandon Allen, 1B/DH – Las Vegas

Allen returned on April 17th from a leg injury he suffered during Spring training and started his rehab with St Lucie. In five games, he batted .417/.640/.647 and was promoted to Las Vegas on April 25th. After he arrived he made his presence known during a game on May 8th, when he made history with Allan Dykstra, Zach Lutz and Taylor Teagarden, as they became the first players to hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back home runs in a PCL game. Allen is current batting .340/.446/.511 through 16 games with the 51s.
