yeixon ruizCongratulations to Yeixon Ruiz of the Kingsport Mets; he’s been named today’s MMN player of the week! How did the 22-year-old second baseman earn this incredible honor? Take a look at the week he put together in the Appalachian League:

.462/.500/.538, 12-for-26, 2 2B, 2 BB, 2 SB, 4 RBI, 6 R

Now that’s a good looking line right there. Ruiz joined the organization in 2010, playing in the Dominican Summer League. Through 58 games played and 177 at-bats, he put together a .260/.376/.350 line with one homer, two doubles, four triples, and 26 RBIs. After a second season in the Dominican, Ruiz made his debut on American soil last season in Kingsport, struggling to a .250/.299/.292 line in 144 at-bats.

However, he’s shown his ability to adjust to the next level of competition so far this season. His big week at the plate has seen his season statistics jump up to a .322/.385/.373 line, including five RBIs and 10 runs scored in 59 at-bats.

When looking at his season splits, it’s interesting to see how drastic his performance is in certain situations. He’s a switch hitter, but swinging the bat much better as a left-hander (.341) than a right-hander (.267).

That’s not a very drastic difference, but it gets better. In 42 at-bats at home, he’s hitting .239, but has put together a .529 mark on the road. He’s only had 17 road at-bats, but it’s still a huge difference. He has another small sample size in day games, but he’s hitting .545 in 11 at-bats, while he’s got a .271 average in 48 night at-bats.

Congratulations to Ruiz on this honor; let’s hope he continues to hit his Appy League opposition!
