MMN Recap 4/20: Gsellman Strikes Out Seven

Las Vegas 9, Sacramento 3

Matt Reynolds homers as Las Vegas erupted for nine runs on twelve hits in Sacramento. Sacramento led early scoring two runs in the first inning, as Grant Green, who has hurt Vegas all series, singled in Ryan Lollis. Grant Green came around to score the second run of the inning.

However, Vegas struck back as T.J. Rivera doubled in Travis Taijeron. They scored again in the fourth as Dilson Herrera doubled in Ty Kelly. They then started to break the game open as  Reynolds homered to set the tone for the fourth inning. Later in the inning Rene Rivera doubled home Taijeron and Roger Bernadina, and then Dilson Herrera singled in Rivera. They scored two more as Rivera drove in Reynolds, and then Kelly hit a double that scored Marc Krauss. They scored again as Krauss hit a sacrifice fly that scored Bernadina.

Duane Below started the game and went Six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits, with three walks. He struck out five. Chase Bradford relieved and threw two scoreless innings, followed by a scoreless inning by Dario Alvarez.

Reynolds led the offense, with a 3 for 5 night and his second home run of the season. Herrera went 2 for 6 with a double and two RBI for his third straight multi-hit game. Rivera went 1 for 2 before exiting with an apparent leg injury after being hit by a pitch. Box Score

Akron 3, Binghamton 2

RHP Robert Gsellman had an outstanding performance, but Binghamton’s bats could not give him a win. Gsellman went 6.1 innings, giving up a run on three hits, and striking out seven and walking three. Gsellman continues to up his K-rate as he has 16 strikeouts in 18.2 innings after recording a K/9 Rate of 4.8 last year in Double-A. Beck Wheeler and Akeel Morris followed, and Morris blew a save as Binghamton was up 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth. Morris gave up a run on two hits and two walks while recording all three outs on strikeouts. Then in the 10th inning, Mike Hepple gave up a walk-off sacrifice fly to Indians Prospect Nellie Rodriguez.

Binghamton scored both of their runs in the 7th inning as OF Stefan Sabol singled in SS Niuman Romero and then Maikis De La Cruz drove in Dominic Smith. However, Victor Cruzado was thrown out at home to end the inning on the De La Cruz hit. After that, the B-Mets were unable to score. L.J. Mazzilli, Romero, and De La Cruz were the only players who recorded hits. Top 1B Prospect Dominic Smith went 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout and is hitting .174 on the season. Box Score

Charlotte 4, St. Lucie 0

Prospect Chris Flexen and the St. Lucie Mets were blanked 4-0, as the St. Lucie team only registered five hits. Flexen gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings, while striking out four and walking two. All the scoring came in the third inning as Flexen gave up six hits, including a walk to Charlotte, and the team batted around.

Luis Guillorme, Michael Katz, Wuilmer Becerra, Jhoan Urena, Patrick Biondi all registered a hit, but St. Lucie couldn’t muster any more as Rays pitcher Greg Harris mowed down the team. Box Score

Columbia 7, Charleston 0

Columbia returned the favor after Charleston’s thrashing on Monday, scoring seven runs and only allowing five hits. P.J. Conlon started the game, and went six innings, while giving up five hits, and striking out six. On the year so far he has a 1.08 ERA and is 2-0 in his first three starts spanning 16.2 innings. Fireballer Tyler Bashlor followed and dominated, tossing two hitless innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Johnny Magliozzi had an inning of work and didn’t give up a hit.

Now onto the offensive side: The Fireflies had eight hits and six walks as they beat up the Riverdogs. The scoring started in the first when after Kevin Kaczmarski reached on an error and Siena walked. Then Joe Tuschak doubled in Kaczmarski and Dash Winningham followed that with a double of his own, scoring two.

Columbia continued their scoring after Dash Winningham drove in Vinny Siena on a single and then Jeffrey Diehl singled in David Thompson in the 3rd. They scored a sixth run in the fourth inning as Kaczmarski tripled as the second batter of the inning, and Jean Rodriguez hit a sac fly to right field. A final run was scored in the fifth to extend the lead as Natanael Ramos drove in David Thompson with a double.

Notable leaders on the offensive side are Dash Winningham who went 2 for 2 with a double, three RBI and 2 walks, raising his average to .255. David Thompson had a hit and scored three times, and is hitting .277 on the season.  Box Score
