Las Vegas (21-17) 8, Oklahoma City (21-16) 5
The 51s had the earliest start time of any team in the organization on Tuesday, something that may only happen a couple of times a season. The 11:04 AM first pitch may have been brutal for the players, but they responded by winning their third in a row, taking three of four from the Dodgers.
Gabriel Ynoa did not have his sharpest stuff of the season, but he was good enough to earn his fifth straight victory. Ynoa went six innings, marking his sixth start in a row where he’s lasted as long. He surrendered his second home run of the season in the fifth inning to James Ramsey, but up until that point, the only run on the scoreboard came on an RBI double in the the second inning from opposing pitcher Logan Bawcom.
Ynoa allowed three runs in six innings on seven hits and three walks while striking out three. He is now 5-0 with with the second best ERA in the Pacific Coast League at 2.09 and his 1.12 WHIP is fourth best.
The 51s’ offense did not get rolling until the third inning, when T.J. Rivera drove in his 32nd and 33rd runs of the season with a single. He would tack on another with a single in the fourth. Las Vegas was held quiet until the seventh inning, when Ty Kelly drove in a run with his second double of the game, and Marc Krauss took Matt West deep for his seventh deep fly of the season. Brandon Nimmo tripled for the first time this year, and Kelly upped his average to .413 with three hits.
Rivera finished the night going 2 for 5 with three runs knocked in giving him a league leading 34 on the season. Nimmo is now hitting .305/.388/.458 in May after reaching base twice last night and knocking in his 15th run.
Josh Edgin and Zack Thornton each turned in scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Jeff Walters allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Edgin has yet to allow a run in 5.2 innings for Las Vegas and has given up only one hit in that span.
After an off day the 51s travel to Colorado Springs for their first matchup of the season with the Sky Sox. Sean Gilmartin (4-1, 2.48) is scheduled to get the ball for the 8:35 PM ET start time.
Altoona (21-17) 5, Binghamton (16-20) 1
The B-Mets offense actually out hit the Curve on the night 9-7 though they couldn’t get the one with runners on going 1 for 13 in that situation compared to 6 for 11 by Altoona. It was a struggle for Mickey Jannis yet again, as he allowed five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings and fell to 1-3 on the season with a 6.43 ERA.
Binghamtons’ bullpen twirled 4.2 innings of hitless shutout relief but the offense was only able to muster a lone run in the sixth inning. Logan Taylor tossed 2.2 scoreless with four strikeouts, lowering his season ERA to 2.31. Luis Mateo got his ERA down to 1.96 with a strikeout in a perfect inning.
Dominic Smith was 1 for 4 on the night and knocked the B-Mets only run in with a ground out. He knocked in his 30th run of the season which is good for second in the Eastern League.
Derrik Gibson went 2 for 5 with a double and scored a run out of the leadoff spot. L.J. Mazzilli was the only other Met with two hits. Matt Oberste, who came into the game 2nd in the Eastern League in batting, went 0 for 4 while starting at third base for the first time since 2014 and for just the third time in his pro career.
Before the game, Press Connects writer Lynn Worthy announced that B-Mets infielder Niuman Romero had been promoted to the 51s. That in combination with a possible Phillip Evans injury leaves a gaping hole at shortstop for Binghamton in which we can all hope Amed Rosario fills.
St. Lucie had their game with Clearwater postponed, they will play a doubleheader that starts at 10:30 this morning. Ricky Knapp (3-2, 2.36) and Scarlyn Reyes (2-4, 6.75) will be on the mound for the Mets.
Our own Al Rabon was at the Fireflies 3-1 victory over Rome in which P.J. Conlon picked up his sixth win, you can read the full recap here.
Mets really should think about moving Alvarez, Smoker, or Jeff Walters off the 40-man and giving TJ Rivera a shot. What have they got to lose?
Yes to Walters and maybe to Alvarez but definitely not on Smoker. He would be scooped up in a second. I agree that we are at the point with Rivera though that he should get a shot over Campbell.
When’s Cecchini supposed to be back?
He was suppose to be back last weekend but suffered a setback. At this point I would say day-to-day.
Teddy, TJ clearly rakes. Besides not being on the 40 man roster, is his seclusion at Vegas strictly based on defense. I thought I read that he was viewed as subpar defensively at all 4 infield spots?
Is that true and have they tried him in the outfield? He should be a good enough athlete to be a 4th or 5th OF.
With the David situation going on not knowing how much he can play isn’t about time to give TJ a shot the kid does nothing but hit and I saw him play 3rd during spring why not give him a chance
Definitely think he deserves a chance over Campbell at this point.
Subpar at SS, limited time at 1b. Best spots are 2B and 3B. He has also played one game in left field this year.
The 51s actually played a game that started at 10:35am at home on 4/26. Talk about brutal…
I hate hearing about back problems for middle infielders.
Very unfortunate and he has suffered two “setbacks” already. Hoping this isn’t an issue that persists the entire season.
