Las Vegas (22-17) 7, Colorado Springs 6 Box Score

Vegas held on to beat Colorado Springs as Rafael Montero didn’t fare well against the Milwaukee Triple-A squad. T.J. Rivera, playing at first base continued to prove that he should have been the call-up over Matt Reynolds with a four-hit night. Paul Sewald saved yet another game, and has continued to excel in Triple-A.

Rivera led the offense with a 4 for 5 night with a triple, two runs batted in, and a strikeout. Shortstop Niuman Romero, who was called up from Binghamton, had a 2 for 4 night while drawing a walk. Right fielder Travis Taijeron hit a three-run homer in the first inning en route to a 1 for 5 day. It was his sixth homer of the year.

Third baseman Ty Kelly also hit a homer in a 1 for 4 day, while walking once and striking out once. He continues to lead baseball in hitting, now with his .407 average. Left fielder Roger Bernadina, catcher Johnny Monell, and center fielder Brandon Nimmo all collected a single.

Montero was ineffective in five innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out five coming off being named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week. Right-hander Zack Thornton didn’t fare any better, giving up two runs on a hit and a walk while striking out two in the next five outs. Lefty Josh Edgin came in for the final out of the seventh and notched a strikeout while picking his first win.

Right-hander Chase Bradford struck out one in a scoreless eighth, while Sewald notched his sixth save in a scoreless ninth. The thousand-dollar man Sewald has continues to be excellent, with a 1.80 ERA and 1.05 WHIP so far in Triple-A.

The 51s take their four-game winning streak back into Colorado Springs tonight at 8:35 PM ET with Sean Gilmartin (4-1, 2.48) scheduled to pitch.

Binghamton 5 (17-21), Altoona 4 Box Score

Binghamton beat Pittsburgh’s Double-A affiliate by a close score of 5 to 4. Tyler Pill had a good performance, including six strikeouts. Catcher Xorge Carrillo had a three-hit game, but allowed two players to steal. Three of the B-Mets doubled in the victory, while four walked in the game.

Pill threw six innings of two-run ball, while giving up five hits, two walks and striking out six in one of his better performances. Righty Luis Mateo struggled through two outs, giving up a run on a hit and a walk. David Roseboom walked two before finishing the seventh inning, giving up the run Mateo let on base but picked up his first B-Mets win. Right-handed reliever Beck Wheeler gave up an additional run on a hit and two walks, while striking out five, making it a close call for the team before closing out his third save of the year.

Carrillo went 3 for 3 with a walk and a double, raising his batting average to .280. Shortstop Derrik Gibson and center fielder Kyle Johnson both had a 1 for 3 day with a double and a walk each. First baseman Dominic Smith hit an RBI single and struck out in his 1 for 4 day. He is currently batting .280 on the season and his 31 RBI are second in the Eastern League, and his 42 hits are tied for third in the Eastern League.

St. Lucie’s game versus Clearwater was cancelled. This was their final game against Clearwater in the first half of the year. Right-hander Chris Flexen starts Friday against Daytona.

Charleston 1, Columbia 0 (20-20) Box Score

Columbia falls to .500 for the year after a shutout by three Charleston pitchers. The Fireflies struck out 14 times against the Yankees Affiliate. Lefty Kevin Canelon did very well, but the offense did not back him up against fellow lefty Nestor Cortes and two RiverDogs relievers.

Canelon had a great outing against Charleston, recording six innings, while giving up a run on four hits and a walk. He struck out six and currently sports an ERA of 3.00. He now has 40 strikeouts on the season in 39 innings and has held opponents to a .225 average. In three May starts he has a 2.00 ERA to go along with a 0.78 WHIP.
