MMN Recap 5/5: Brandon Nimmo Homers, Wuilmer Becerra Stays Hot

El Paso 7, Las Vegas 6 (13-13) Box Score

Brandon Nimmo homered for his first of the season as El Paso beats Vegas in a walk-off wild pitch by Chase Bradford. For the second straight night the 51s blew a lead of at least five runs.

Seth Lugo had a slightly better performance this time out with four runs given up, three earned, on five hits while striking out three in 5.1 innings. Zach Thornton finished the frame and gave up a hit and struck out one. However, Jeff Walters gave up two runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Paul Sewald continued his great relief pitching with two scoreless innings. However, Chase Bradford gave up a run without allowing a hit in the 10th inning.

Roger Bernadina drove in two with a double in a 1 for 5 day. He struck out once and stole a base as well. Matt Reynolds had two hits, including a double, and drove in a runner. Nimmo hit his first home run since September 4th and went 1 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts on the day. He now has 12 hits and eight RBI during his current seven-game hitting streak.

Travis Taijeron went 1 for 2 with 2 walks, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. T.J. Rivera was inserted in the ninth inning and singled, stretching his hitting streak to 11 games and lifting his average to .354 on the year.

Portland 2, Binghamton 1 (13-11) Box Score

Six players on the B-Mets gained hits, but Portland avoided being swept after two glorious wins from Binghamton. In the 11:00 game, Rainy Lara started and had a very solid start, and was backed up by Akeel Morris. However, Binghamton couldn’t string together enough hits to score more than a run against the Double-A Red Sox Team.

Lara took the hard-luck loss going six innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three. Morris finished the game, pitching two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Morris is on a roll with four scoreless appearances in a row.

On the offensive side, Derrik Gibson, Kyle Johnson, Dominic Smith, Victor Cruzado, L.J. Mazzilli and Maikis De La Cruz all collected a hit. Johnson was the only one who recorded an extra base hit with a double.

St. Lucie 8 (15-12), Fort Myers 3 Box Score

St. Lucie opened up a four game set with Fort Myers, and walloped them with eight runs on eleven hits. John Mora led the offense and drove in two. Corey Oswalt started and pitched a solid five innings, while the bullpen closed it down for St. Lucie. Four players had multi-hit games.

Left fielder Mora had a 2 for 3 day with a double and two RBI, while walking twice. He’s hitting .260 on the year. Shortstop Amed Rosario walked twice in a 1 for 3 day, and stole his sixth base, but committed his fifth error. Right fielder Wuilmer Becerra continued his hot hitting with a 2 for 4 day with a walk and strikeout and is now hitting .405. He now has a 10-game hitting streak and overtakes Ty Kelly for the highest average in the Mets system.

Center fielder Champ Stuart showed his patient side in a 1 for 3 day with a double and three walks from the leadoff position. Designated hitter Kevin Taylor and first baseman Michael Katz also collected two hits.

Oswalt allowed all three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings while striking out 4. According to the broadcast, He was hitting up to 96 on his fastball, which is fairly unusual for Oswalt. He moves to 2-1 on the season with a 5.63 ERA and 1.58 WHIP.

Tim Peterson had a shut down performance yet again striking out three out of four batters faced. Peterson now has 21 strikeouts in 11.2 innings to go along with his 0.73 ERA. Corey Taylor also chipped in two scoreless innings and has allowed a run in just one of eight outings now to start his St. Lucie career.

Columbia was rained out

They will play two tonight in Greensboro, starting at 5:00 pm. Thomas McIlraith will take the ball for the first game.
