MMN Recap: Alonso Collects Two Hits Including 20th Homer

Las Vegas (43-48) 5, Albuquerque (44-46) 4  Box Score

Kaczmarski returned to the minor leagues with an RBI single from the leadoff spot, as he looks to get back in a rhythm after hardly playing for the last few weeks. McNeil had a modest game by his standards, with only a single in four trips to the plate, but he extended his on-base streak to 26 games. Alonso, moved down to the sixth spot in the order, started the second half nicely with a home run and a double. However, despite the solid OBP and power numbers, he struck out two more times as his strikeout rate has greatly risen since his promotion. Luis Guillorme‘s nine-game hitting streak ended with an 0-4 day. Phillip Evans scored on a Little League home run that included three errors on one play.

Martin cruised through the first five scoreless innings before finally getting hit around in the sixth and letting up four runs while only recording one out. Purke got the final two outs of the inning, allowing an inherited run and throwing only 5 of his 11 pitches for strikes, as control problems have often been the reason behind his subpar outings. Krol and Smith closed it out, and both have had very impressive minor league seasons this year. Smith looked solid in his very brief MLB stint and it shouldn’t be too long before he’s back up, especially if he keeps up this high level of performance in a hitter’s league.

Akron 3 (52-38), Binghamton 2 (43-45) BOX SCORE

The Rumble Ponies had 10 hits on Wednesday, but only scored two runs. Seven starters recorded a hit, three having a multi-hit game. As a team, have had a double digit hit performances in their last two games. All-Star Tim Tebow only recorded a single hit, but hes hitting .324 in his last ten games. Josh Allen, like Tebow, is red hot in his last ten, hitting .333. Allen, signed after the Jeff McNeil promotion, has hit .283 to start his Mets career.

Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis was solid on the night for the Ponies, turning in seven strong innings. Jannis, 30, was hit for five runs in five innings of work his last time out against Erie. Matt Blackman has been superb since being promoted from St. Lucie, only allowing one run in seven appearances. Blackman was a Mid-Season All-Star for St. Lucie this season.

Charlotte (44-43) 6, St. Lucie  (34-52) 0 Game 1 (F/7) BOX SCORE

Jeremy Vasquez walked once, but has struggled since moving to St. Lucie, posting a .575 OPS.

  • RHP Trey Cobb: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (0-0, 10.80)

Peterson continued his struggles from his last outing, giving up five earned in this one after six earned in his last one on last Wednesday. Peterson, after being stellar in his first three games in High-A, has seen his ERA climb by almost two full runs in his last two outings. Cobb was promoted on the recently after shining with Columbia.

Charlotte (45-43) 4, St. Lucie (34-53) 0 Game 2 (F/7) BOX SCORE

For the second straight game, the Mets scored zero runs on three hits and were silenced. Wuilmer Becerra reached twice, being the only Met to do so. Michael Paez and Dan Rizzie both walked. Infielder T.J. Rivera, who had Tommy John during the 2017 season and was with St. Lucie to begin his rehab, left the team for Las Vegas.

Gibbons, 25, made his first start being re-assigned to Port St. Lucie after his one-game stint in Binghamton. He has allowed multiple runs in seven of his last eight starts for St. Lucie. Austin McGeorge has been better since being demoted from Binghamton, where he posted a 7.96 ERA.

Hagerstown 6 (34-54), Columbia 0 (43-44) BOX SCORE

Just like the St. Lucie Mets, the Fireflies were shut out and recorded three hits. Blake Tiberi recorded two hits, a single and a double. Tiberi is hitting .317 in his last ten games. Zach Rheams doubled in his Columbia debut after being promoted from Kingsport.

Dibrell was solid on Wednesday, but received no help from his defense. Coming off a strong start against his last time out, Dibrell continued to pitch well. He’s been very solid for Columbia this season, but has turned it into another gear in his last 10 starts, posting an ERA under three in that time span. Trent Johnson was knocked around in his Columbia debut after an abbreviated stint with Brooklyn to start his season. Johnson, 21, was drafted by the Mets in 2016 on the second day of the draft, and spent last season exclusively at Brooklyn.

Brooklyn 6 (13-13), Aberdeen IronBirds 0 (12-14) BOX SCORE

Rasquin doubled twice, reaching another time, and padded his average to a comfortable .333 to begin the campaign at Brooklyn. Brian Sharp also knocked in a run, his seventh of the year. After a slow start, he is hitting .290 since June 26th. Chandler Avant drove in a run with an extra-base hit, and Ross Adolph tripled.

  • RHP Jaison Vilera: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, BB, 9 K (2-1, 1.37)
  • RHP Mac Lozer: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K (0-1, 1.38)

Pitching was the strength for Brooklyn last night, with Vilera and Lozer combining for nine shutout innings. The Venezuelan born Vilera, a 2015 signing, was absolutely dominant. In two starts against Aberdeen, his two most recent starts this season, hes allowed two runs, struck out 17, walked two, and given up only eight hits in 14 innings of work. Vilera has a career 1.67 ERA, spanning over three seasons. Lozer, 22, has been scoreless in 10 of his 11 appearances.

Greeneville 5 (7-14), Kingsport 4 (12-9) BOX SCORE

Sixth overall pick Jared Kelenic hit another home run the Mets, his third on the season. It was a bomb into right field, clearing the scoreboard at Hunter Wright Stadium. Shervyen Newton also homered for the Mets, his second on the year. Newton seems to be continuing his strong season from 2017, in which he hit .311 with a .877 OPS, his breakout campaign. Hes already doubled his home run total from last year, which could be a huge step in his progression.

  • RHP Mitch Hickey: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (0-0, 0.00)
  • RHP Nelson Leon: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K (1-0, 6.97)

Nate Peden was shaky for Kingsport, allowing five runs in four innings. He let nine Reds reach, and he only struck out two. Peden has alternated between solid and poor starts in his last four outings. Mitch Hickey was strong again, as he hasn’t allowed a run in either of his two appearances this season for Kingsport.

GCL Cardinals 12 (15-6), GCL Mets 2 (13-8) BOX SCORE

Ronny Mauricio extended his hitting streak to 20 games. Mauricio was the Mets international signing in 2017, signing for a club record 2.1 million dollars.

Jurgen Jiminez was solid for the Mets, turning in five strong innings though he suffered his first loss of the season.

 DSL Twins 9 (24-14), DSL Mets1 5 (21-14) BOX SCORE

Parra tripled for the first time this year. Regnault reached all four times, doubled, and drove in two.

Escalona gave the Mets 3 and 2/3 solid innings in relief. He struck out seven, more than doubling his previous career high.

DSL Mets2 8 (17-18), DSL Brewers 4 (20-14) BOX SCORE

Felix Valerio had three hits, Endy Rodriguez knocked three in, and Jorge Martinez doubled.

Christofer Dominguez threw five-plus innings, allowing two runs, raising his era to 1.46 and he was named to the DSL All-Star Game.
