MMN Recap: Alonso Finishes Double Short of Cycle

Reno (50-49) 11, Las Vegas (46-53) 8  Box Score

  • Peter Alonso 1B: 3-for-4, HR, 3B, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R, .277/.404/.545

Alonso finished a double short of the cycle as he begins to heat up. He also had a two-hit game with a homer on Thursday. Patrick Kivlehan had two hits on the night including a grand slam.

Trenton (53-44) 10, Binghamton (46-51) 3  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies fell way behind early in this game and the offense just couldn’t come close to catching up. Urena hit a two run home run in the ninth inning to bring the deficit to seven runs, but that was as close as Binghamton could make it. Nido seems to have turned his season around and is hitting .304/.322/.536 in July. Most of Nido’s offense has come against lefties: He is hitting .418/.448/.709 against left-handed pitching in 2018.

Gonzalez just didn’t have anything close to his best stuff in his second Double-A start as he got blasted for 14 hits and 10 runs over five innings. He needed 101 pitches to get through five innings, threw three wild pitches, and finished the game with a -3 game score. Still, despite this one very poor start, Gonzalez has pitched quite well all year. Nogosek had his best appearance with Binghamton and seems to be settling into Double-A a bit better with two consecutive scoreless appearances. With the game out of reach, catcher Jose Garcia came in to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.

St. Lucie (38-57) 6, Palm Beach (52-41) 1  Box Score

St. Lucie’s offense had a big game as they scored seven runs on 15 hits. The Mets actually had the opportunity to score many more runs, but went just 4-for-21 with runners in scoring position. Gimenez continued his ridiculously hot July with three hits and his 28th stolen base of the season (which is tied for the league lead). Gimenez is hitting .373/.393/.525 in July. Sanchez has struck out just one time in 15 games as he continues his offensive breakout.

Llanes had his best start of the season as he needed just 99 pitches to get through 7 shutout innings. Llanes has been much better recently and has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts (1.07 ERA in July). Pobereyko has 17 strikeouts in his last 9 games (11.2 innings pitched).

Augusta (48-48) 5, Columbia (46-48) 3  Box Score

The Fireflies had only six baserunners in the game, so they actually did a decent job of bringing their few players on base around to score. Manea is hitting .308/.400/.564 over the 22 games played in the second half of Columbia’s season.

Grotz made his sixth start with the Fireflies and, while this outing was an improvement over his last three starts, an error by Grotz himself resulted in him allowing five runs. Grotz has allowed at least five runs in each of his last four starts. Payne has a solid 30:5 K:BB ratio in 28.1 innings pitched this season.

Lowell (20-14) 3, Brooklyn (18-16) 1  Box Score

With seven hits and five walks in Friday’s game, the Cyclones had plenty of opportunities to score, but they went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and could only push across a single run. Their lone run scored when Manny Rodriguez doubled home Cortes in the seventh inning. Dirocie has an 8:8 BB:K ratio since joining Brooklyn and has done a great job cutting down on his strikeouts so far in 2018.

Wilson made his sixth start again and, once again, pitched pretty well over five innings. Despite a fairly high ERA, Wilson hasn’t been all that bad in any of his starts: he’s allowed more than three earned runs just once and has struck out 27 batters in 28 innings. Walker a 20:1 K:BB ratio in 12.2 innings between Kingsport and Brooklyn this season.

Princeton (20-10) 5, Kingsport (15-13) 3  Box Score

Kingsport’s offense didn’t have their strongest game as they scored only three runs on seven hits and struck out a combined 10 times. Newton continued his breakout season with his fourth home run of the year (his third in sixth games). The only apparent flaw in Newton’s game is that he has struck out 43 times in the 25 games, a very high rate, but, even with the strikeouts, his performance is very impressive for a 19-year old. Kelenic’s batting average has gone down upon his promotion to Kingsport, but he is still getting on base at a very solid rate and is hitting for plenty of power.

Peden started the game for the Mets and had his best outing of the season as he threw five scoreless innings and struck out a career high 7 batters. Peden has walked one batter or less in four of his five starts in 2018. Kingsport was pitching a shutout until the eighth inning, in which five runs scored and Kingsport lost their lead.

GCL Nationals (10-17) 8, GCL Mets (16-12) 4  Box Score

The Mets scored four runs on nine hits and went 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position in Friday’s game. Mauricio now has 15 extra base hits in just 27 games in his debut season. Bohorquez is hitting .351/.415/.541 so far in July.

Otanez has shown flashes of being the exciting pitcher that was seen before last year’s Tommy John surgery, as indicated by his 21 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. However, walks have been a major issue for him and he has only been able to make it past the fourth inning twice in 2018.

DSL Mets1 (23-17) 3, DSL Yankees (16-25) 0  Box Score

The Mets had just six hits in the game, but three of them came in the fifth inning, allowing the Mets to score all three of their runs. Hernandez has just one hit in his last 23 at bats.

Santos is just 16-years old, but he’s already 6’8″ and is dominating the Dominican Summer League. With five hitless innings in Sundays’ game, Santos has now allowed three runs or less in all 9 of his professional starts. He is definitely someone to keep an eye on going forward. Escalona carried the no-hitter into the ninth inning, but allowed a single after getting two outs.

DSL Rangers1 (24-15) 6, DSL Mets2 (18-23) 3  Box Score

The Mets had eight hits and five walks in the game, but were just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and, as a result, could only score three runs. Valerio has a 20:10 BB:K ratio on the season and will be only 17-years old for the entire 2018 season.

Gonzalez started the game for the Mets and was knocked out of the game in the second inning after giving up six earned runs. The bullpen combined for 7.1 scoreless innings, but the damage had been done and the team was unable to come back.
