MMN Recap: Alonso Homers in Fourth Straight Game

Albuquerque (9-15) 7, Las Vegas (9-15) 6  Box Score

The 51s scored six runs on ten hits in this Sunday afternoon game. Smith has not hit for much power yet in 2018, but he has been getting on base at an extremely high rate and reached base three more times in this game. Den Dekker now has hit four home runs in his last seven games. Luis Guillorme had drove in three runs, two of which scored on a fourth inning double.

Worley made his first start of the season after being signed several weeks and got hit around in three innings of work. McGowan pitched three decent innings in relief, but the two runs he gave up proved to be the difference in the result of this game. After being recently acquired from the Padres, Baumann made his organizational debut and pitched a scoreless inning.

Binghamton (11-9) 6, Erie (7-14) 4  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies scored six runs on twelve hits and ended up winning this game in the tenth inning. Alonso continued his incredible hot streak with more hits, including his seventh home run of the season. He has now homered in four straight games and has easily been the best hitter in the Eastern League so far as he leads the league in all three slash stats.

Shaw made the start for Binghamton and, while allowed high number of hits, he was able to limit Erie to two runs. Torres pitched two scoreless innings in relief and has been excellent so far this season as he has struck out 13 hitters in just seven innings. Bashlor has been similarly dominant, with batters hitting just .133 against him in 2018.

Palm Beach (13-11) 8, St. Lucie (10-13) 6  Box Score

The Mets were able to push across six runs by knocking fourteen hits and going a solid 5-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Six players in the starting lineup had a multi-hit game. Carpio put St. Lucie on the board immediately with a leadoff home run in the first. Ian Strom has cooled off a bit after his hot start and is hitting just .219 with no extra base hits over his last ten games.

Dunn continued his strong start to the season by allowing just two earned runs over 5.1 innings. However, while Dunn has had much better results this season and hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start, he has had trouble going deep into games and pitched less than six innings in each starter. Ryan and Blackham, who had both been dominant, struggled in their relief appearances. Ryan allowed his first run since August 11 of last season.

Augusta (17-6) 2, Columbia (12-12) 0  Box Score

The Fireflies offense was held to just three hits, all of which were singles, in the shutout. Columbia has been slumping for the past few games as well, as the team scored just two runs over three games in their series with Augusta. Vasquez extended his on base streak to a very impressive 23 games.

Viall had another very solid start, although he was not quite as dominant as he was in his two prior starts, in which he struck double-digit batters. Viall’s 34 strikeouts so far this season ranks him second in the South Atlantic League. Cobb now has a 13:1 K:BB ratio on the season.
