MMN Recap: Brentz, Alonso Lead Vegas Offense in Win

Las Vegas (54-57) 12, Omaha (50-60) 11   Box Score

It was an offensive outburst as Las Vegas had 16 hits, and five players had multi-hit games. Borenstein continued the mashing he’s done since June with a double and a single. He’s mashed in every month except in May when he was terrible. Alonso is 5-14 with four extra-base hits so far in August as he continued to heat up with a big day at the plate. Brentz had his second straight good game since coming off the DL.

Crismatt’s first two starts for Las Vegas were solid, but his last four now have been atrocious, as he has combined for 25 earned runs on 33 hits in 14.1 innings. Crismatt was inevitably going to have some problems pitching in the thin-aired Cashman Field, but things have gotten ugly for him as of late after pitching well for Binghamton. Purke had been making strides, but took a big step back in late July and started August off with a rough outing in which his control issues returned to bite him. Krol continued his solid showing for Las Vegas, while Peterson had his second straight good outing since being demoted. Baumann had a terrible July as well and didn’t exactly improve upon that last night.

Binghamton (51-59) vs. Harrisburg (56-52)

The Rumble Ponies game against Harrisburg was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday evening.

Daytona (57-50) 3, St. Lucie (42-64) 2  Box Score

The Mets offense struggled in Friday’s game as they could score just two runs (one of which scored on an error) on seven hits and were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. After hitting .281/.375/.521 in July, Paez has continued his hot hitting in August and has extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Sanchez has struck out only seven times in 23 games with St. Lucie, although six of those have come in the six games he’s played since returning from a minor injury.

Kay struggled with his command for a second straight start as he walked four batters and needed 96 pitches to get through five innings. Walks have been a major issue for Kay since his promotion to St. Lucie and he has now walked 20 batters in 33.2 innings. You can read the full write up on Kay here. Villines has gone 11 straight appearances without allowing an earned run.

Columbia (51-55) 6, Asheville (46-62) 3  Box Score

Every player in Columbia’s lineup had at least one hit and the team combined for 15 in total. The Fireflies were just 4-for-17 with runners in scoring position, so they didn’t score as many runs as they could have, but it was still an impressive offensive showing nonetheless. Moreno had his third home run in his last seven games as he is starting to display some interesting power.

Renteria had his best start of the season, needing just 88 pitches to make it through six shutout innings and tying a season-high with seven strikeouts. Since returning from injury in mid-July, Renteria has thrown 16.0 innings without allowing an earned run. Columbia’s bullpen struggled a bit in this game, but Henry and Hernandez were still able to preserve the lead over the last three innings.

Aberdeen (19-26) 5, Brooklyn (25-22) 4  Box Score

The Cyclones offense didn’t have any extra base hits in the game and were just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position, but they still managed to push across four runs in the ten inning game. Lagrange hasn’t hit for much power in 2018, but he’s hit .333 with a 5:5 BB:K ratio over his last ten games. Rasquin has had two hits in five of his last seven games and is hitting .412 over his last 10 games.

James allowed 12 hitters to reach base in less than six innings, but would have been able to limit the damage if not for an error that led to two unearned runs. Despite his low ERA, has allowed more hits than innings pitched and has only 27 strikeouts in 45.2 innings pitched with Brooklyn. Colon hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 18.0 innings pitched and has struck out 25 batters in 20.2, but he allowed the winning run to score on a wild pitch in Friday’s game.

Kingsport (22-19) 9, Bristol (18-23) 8  Box Score

The Mets scored nine runs on twelve hits in an exciting comeback, extra-inning game. The Mets were down 7-1 heading into the sixth inning. but scored at least once in each of the next five innings to win the game. Yoel Romero walked it off for the Mets with a single in the 10th inning. Kelenic hadn’t had a hit in his last five games and had just 2 hits in his last 31 at bats (although he also walked nine times in that span), but he broke out of his slump with a two-hit game. He also stole his eleventh base of the season.

Kingsport pitchers had a rough night with their control as they walked a combined 12 batters while striking out only 4 hitters. Moreno was making his first start since June 19 (he had thrown three scoreless relief appearances after returning from an undisclosed injury) and struggled through three innings.

GCL Mets (20-18) 3, GCL Marlins (13-25) 2  Box Score

The Mets had just four hits in the game and were held to a single run for the first nine innings of the game. Entering the 10th inning down by a run, Palmer hit a walk-off single (the second runner scored on an error during the play so Palmer was only given one RBI for the hit).

Cameron Planck started the game for the Mets and was making his first appearance since July 2, but was taken out due to injury after the second batter of the game. Hanhold was making his first rehab appearance coming back from an oblique injury and struck out all three batters he faced swinging. Hardy has 11 strikeouts in 9.1 innings in 2018.

DSL Mets1 (32-21) 7, DSL Phillies Red (23-30) 3  Box Score

The Mets had plenty of opportunities to score as they recorded 10 hits, 3 walks, and were hit by 4 pitches. They made the most of these opportunities as the team went 5-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Valerio has a 26:15 BB:K ratio this season and is hitting .405 over his last 10 games. Loyo has been hit by a ridiculous 14 pitches in just 138 PA this season.

Dominguez and Santos combined to shut out the Phillies over the first eight innings of this game. Dominguez has allowed two runs or less in every game in 2018.

DSL Mets2 (26-27) 1, DSL Phillies White (30-23) 0  Box Score

The Mets didn’t have much offense in Friday’s game as they scored only one run on four hits. Their lone run (and the only run in the game) scored with two outs in the fourth when Soto doubled home Salazar. Salazar is hitting .394 with eight walks over his last 10 games.

Two Mets pitchers combined to pitch a shutout against the Phillies. Colina continued his recent stretch of dominance with his third straight scoreless outing. The 17-year old righty hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs since June 16 and has lowered his ERA from 9.53 to 3.29 over that span. Martinez tossed 4.1 perfect innings to close out the game.
