MMN Recap: Christian James, Nabil Crismatt Toss Gems

Las Vegas (31-42) 5, Reno (33-40) 3  Box Score

Alonso had his first extra-base hit with the 51s, hitting a run scoring double in the 7th to give them a 4-3 lead. He is still yet to show much of his impressive power in his small sample size with Las Vegas so far. McNeil has gotten off to a nice start, and has gotten at least two hits in three straight games. Colon and Cody Asche also collected RBIs.

  • RHP Kevin McGowan (2-1, 4.79 ERA): 0.0 IP, H, BB
  • LHP Matt Purke (W, 2-0, 5.16 ERA): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, BB, 2 K
  • RHP Jacob Rhame (1-1, 4.15 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Conlon had his first quality start since rejoining the Mets organization; he had been struggling immensely. McGowan faced two batters in the seventh and could not get either of them out, but Purke came in to keep the game tied at three. Rhame threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close it out as he collected his sixth save of the season.

Binghamton (35-36) 7, Trenton (41-30) 1 Box Score

This Binghamton lineup does not ooze with future Major Leaguer players but they got the job done tonight. They went 4-for-8 with runners in scoring position so that helps. Urena has not been overly exciting but he continues to produce. At this point, he might have a look at Vegas at some point this year. Kevin Taylor left the game early.

Crismatt has now struck out 82 batters in 81.1 innings. He does not throw particularly hard and that limits his ceiling but he has done nothing to show why he can’t be a Major League starter yet. I think the Mets would be served to move him to Vegas (and maybe even the Majors) soon so they can get a better look at him. Taylor is back to getting ground balls like he was before.

Lakewood (42-28) 8, Columbia (34-34) 1 Box Score

The Fireflies left eight runners on base. Matt Winaker had a solid day and has been good since April. In April, he hit just .220/.327/.305. In May, he hit .284/.410/.432 and so far in June, he has hit .262/.360/.381. While the slugging might seem low, it is worth noting that the SAL is a huge pitchers league.

  • LHP Anthony Kay (3-4, 4.74 ERA): 4 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 5 K
  • RHP Darwin Ramos (0-2, 5.63 ERA): 3 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, BB, 2 K
  • RHP Taylor Henry (0-1, 0.68 ERA): 1 IP, BB, 2 K
  • RHP Connor O’Neil (3-0, 2.57 ERA): 1 IP, H, K

Kay has not been great since his strong first few games. The good news is he is healthy. The downside is that he has not moved as quickly as the Mets would have hoped. The bright side is that he is throwing the ball hard and he is getting his strikeouts. He is still trying to get over the hump from Tommy John and this is his first professional season by all practical purposes. O’Neil has struck out 33% of the batters he has faced this year.

Brooklyn (5-2) 6, Connecticut (2-5) 0 Box Score

  • Jose Miguel Madina RF: 1-for-5, 2 Runs, 3 K, .385/.429/.538
  • Chase Chambers 1B: 2-for-5, Run, HR, 2 RBI, K, .294/.368/.529

Chambers in the Penn League might be fun to watch. The big first baseman should hit a lot of dingers for Brooklyn. Medina has had a hot start to his second stint in Brooklyn.

James has only given up one run between three levels this year. He has been un-scored upon in his only two starts in Brooklyn. I think it has the point has been beaten into a pulp at this point but he really does not belong at this level. He should be in Columbia at the least.

Kingsport (3-0) 5, Princeton (0-3) 4 Box Score

Kingsport won on a walk-off single by Luis Santana. Both Santana and Newton were seen as prospects who could break out and so far, both have. These two have led an exciting Kingsport team. L.A. Woodard made his professional debut and scored the game winning run. Phil Capra also made his pro debut going 2-for-3 with a walk.

Peden was a bonus baby from last years draft. He is healthy to start his professional career unlike some of his other pitching mates. There is a decent amount of talent there. McCall is another high schooler from last year but he will likely be in the bullpen this season for the most part.

DSL Mets1 (8-9) 2, DSL Rockies (6-11) 0 Box Score

  • Adrian Hernandez CF: 1-for-5, Run, BB, K, .333/.417/.405
  • Juan Loyo C: 2-for-2, RBI, .429/.568/.464

Hernandez continues his strong hitting this season. The Mets have been quick to promote with their other big signings from last summer so perhaps Hernandez is next on that list.

  • LHP Cesar Loaiza (3-0, 0.61 ERA): 5 IP, 5 H, BB, 6 K
  • RHP Victor Isturiz (0-0, 1.32 ERA): 4 IP, 4 H, BB, 3 K

Loiaza has done a nice job of limiting the walks after his first start. He has also been missing his bats and he’s a big lefty so he might be one to keep an eye on.

DSL Tigers1 (6-11) 4, DSL Mets2 (11-6) 3 Box Score

There was not a lot of offense for the DSL Mets2 in this one. Astudillo is hitting for more power in the early going this year as opposed to last year.

  • RHP Andres German (2-0, 3.29 ERA): 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 4 K
  • RHP Miguel Mata (0-1, 6.75): 1.1 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 K
  • RHP Antonio Villalba (1-1, 2.70 ERA): 1.1 IP, H, 2 K

Villalba has been solid early in his DSL career. We will still need some reports on him but so far, the results look alright. The command is not great but he has his strikeouts.
