Tacoma (22-21) 10, Las Vegas (17-26) 6  Box Score

The Las Vegas offense was pretty quiet last night outside of a five-spot in the fourth inning aided by three Tacoma errors in the span of two plays. Den Dekker continued to heat up, and while he may not carry a ton of upside at this point, his strong defense and good contact skills could earn him a temporary promotion as the fourth outfielder in the absence of Yoenis Cespedes and Juan Lagares.

The defensively versatile Kelly continued to hold down shortstop while Luis Guillorme is in the Majors and Gavin Cecchini is on the DL, and had a nice night at the plate as well.

Interestingly, the 51s also put Smith in the outfield for the first time in his professional career. They wanted to see how he looked out there as they search for much needed outfield depth. He went the whole game without any errors or serious miscues, and even had an outfield assist. He went 0-3 at the plate but still got on base to support his strong .392 OBP for the season.

  • RHP Drew Gagnon (L, 0-2, 7.14 ERA): 4.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  • RHP Gerson Bautista (0-0, 9.82 ERA): 2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K
  • LHP Buddy Baumann (0-0, 1.46 ERA): 1.0 IP, 2 H, R, 0 BB, 2 K

Gagnon continued his struggles and couldn’t get through give innings with 97 pitches. Bautista has also struggled mightily in his first taste of Las Vegas. Baumann, fresh off his demotion after an ugly showing with the Mets, has had a really good year in Triple-A so far but gave up a run last night despite striking out two and walking none. It is very likely that we will see him in Queens at some point again this year.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats was suspended due to rain.

The St. Lucie Mets’ game against the Fort Myers Miracle was suspended in the second inning due to rain. Fort Myers is holding a 2-0 lead over St. Lucie.

Charleston RiverDogs (18-23) 5, Columbia Fireflies (22-19) 1 Box Score

  • LHP Anthony Kay (1-2, 4.04 ERA): 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 5 K
  • RHP Yeizo Campos (0-0, 0.00 ERA): 2 IP, H, BB, 3 K
  • RHP Darwin Ramos (0-0, 5.31 ERA): 1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Anthony Kay made his sixth start of the season for Columbia, and he held Charleston scoreless before facing trouble in the fourth inning. Kay, a native of Stony Brook, New York, allowed a leadoff double to open the fourth inning. After getting the next batter to fly out, third baseman Rigoberto Terrazas committed a fielding error to put runners on first and third. Kay allowed two run-scoring singles to dig the Fireflies into a 3-1 deficit. All three runs that Kay allowed were unearned.

Campos cruised through two innings of work in only his second appearance of the season. In his six innings this season, Campos has only allowed three hits and one walk while striking out seven. Ramos struggled with his command in the eighth inning, walking two batters and allowing three singles to surrender two runs.

The Columbia offense struggled to find any consistency at the plate. The Fireflies only mustered six hits and two walks while striking out seven times on the night. The lone run came in the second inning after left fielder Raphael Gladu struck a two-out double and came around to score on a RiverDogs fielding error.

Jeremy Vasquez reached base safely twice, and he is now slashing .313/.421/.493 on the season. His .913 OPS leads the team this year.

Wuilmer Becerra struggled after a nice performance in his season debut on Friday. Becerra came from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Mets organization along with Noah Syndergaard and Travis d’Arnaud in the R.A. Dickey trade, and he has battled injuries for much of his minor league career. The once-promising prospect previously owned a spot on the Mets 40-man roster, but he was outrighted last October but remained in the Mets’ system.
