MMN Recap: Dunn Bounces Back, Alonso Homers Again

Las Vegas (55-57) 9, Iowa (41-70) 6   Box Score

Kelly put the 51s up 2-1 in the third with a two-run homer, one of two extra-base hits on the night as he got on base three times. Alonso can officially be classified as on a hot streak now after struggling for a large part of his tenure in Las Vegas. Over his last five games, he is 9-22 with two home runs and four doubles. Smith has been struggling lately and has been struggling to hit for much power all season, but he swatted a solo shot last night to bring the 51s within a run in their eventual comeback win. Colton Plaia got two hits to continue what has been a very solid stretch of hitting since June, and his current .787 OPS would be his career high by .094 points.

Taylor was not great in his second career Triple-A start, struggling with control while walking five and only throwing 47 of his 89 pitches for strikes, but he got the win nonetheless. Regnault was dominant in his best outing of the season, firing three perfect innings on 37 pitches along with five strikeouts. It was nice to see him pitch more like how he has in previous years, as this year has been very shaky for him. Bautista has been allowing a lot of baserunners, and he allowed two more last night, but he struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.

Binghamton (52-59) 3, Harrisburg (56-53) 2 Box Score

Levi Michael was also on base three times in the game with a hit and two walks.

Righty Corey Taylor picked up the win with a scoreless seventh inning.

Harrisburg (57-53) 1, Binghamton (52-60) 0 (Final/7) Box Score

Justin Dunn took the hill for the Rumble Ponies and turned in a solid outing, allowing only one run over six innings. The performance was a tremendous bounce back for Dunn, who allowed seven runs over five innings in his last start. The lone blemish on Dunn’s night came on a Carter Kieboom solo home run in the sixth inning.

The Binghamton offense failed to get anything going all night, collecting only three hits as a team. The bright spot in the lineup was third baseman Will Toffey, part of the return in the Jeurys Familia trade. Toffey, a fourth-round pick by the Oakland Athletics in the 2017 draft, collected two hits, one of which went for a double. In 13 games since joining the Mets organization, Toffey has a .863 OPS.

St. Lucie (43-64) 7, Daytona (57-51) 2 Box Score

  • RHP Gabriel Llanes (5-9, 4.77 ERA): 6 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Matt Pobereyko (2-3, 4.14 ERA): 3 IP, BB, 3 K

Starting pitcher Gabriel Llanes allowed tons of batters to reach base, surrendering nine hits and four walks in only six innings of work. Fortunately, he was able to scatter most of the damage, ultimately surrendering only two runs on the night. In the third inning, Llanes allowed a run-scoring single to give the Tortugas a 1-0 lead. Llanes started the seventh inning, but allowed three consecutive hits and a walk before getting pulled for reliever Matt Pobereyko.

Pobereyko entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs, but he induced a flyout and two strikeouts to get out of the jam. He pitched two more clean innings to conclude the game.

The St. Lucie offense was held scoreless for the first two innings. In the bottom of the third, Blake Tiberi drew a leadoff walk, and Anthony Dimino followed up with a single. With two outs, Michael Paez drew a walk to load the bases. First baseman Jeremy Vasquez then cleared the bases with a single and a fielding error by the Daytona right fielder.

In the fourth inning, Becerra, Tiberi, and Dimino strung together three consecutive singles to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. Luis Carpio walked to load the bases, and Gene Cone lifted a sacrifice fly to score another run. Paez capped off the inning with a run-scoring single.

Asheville (48-62) 8, Columbia (51-57) 0 Box Score

  • RHP Chris Viall (3-7, 5.05 ERA): 4.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R (4 ER), 3 BB, 9 K
  • RHP Darwin Ramos (3-3, 4.86 ERA): 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 K

Columbia starter Chris Viall failed to complete five innings of work. Viall, a sixth-round pick by the Mets in 2016, allowed six runs (four earned) in 4.2 innings of work. Viall struck out nine Tourists, but his ERA rose from 4.84 to 5.05 for the season.

Designated hitter Matt Winaker struck a two-out double in the first inning and Columbia went on to be no-hit for the remainder of the game. Winaker, a fifth-round pick out of Stanford in 2017, now has 16 doubles on the season while sporting a .762 OPS. First baseman Dionis Paulino walked in the second inning, and Asheville pitching then retired the final 16 Columbia batters.

Brooklyn (26-22) 4, Aberdeen (19-27) 3 Box Score

The Cyclones pitching staff managed to hold the IronBirds to only three runs despite allowing nine hits. Starting pitcher Yeizo Campos tossed 6.2 innings while surrendering three runs. Relievers Tommy Wilson and Ryley Gilliam did not allow a run in 2.1 innings of combined work. Ryley Gilliam has yet to allow an earned run this season. The pitching staff did not walk any IronBirds on the night.

The Cyclones offense was held scoreless for the first four innings of the evening. Brooklyn jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Aberdeen came back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. Brooklyn responded with two more runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth inning. The two teams would trade runs in the seventh inning, and Brooklyn would go on to win 4-3.

Right fielder Ross Adolph collected another hit while also driving in a run. The 12th-round pick by the Mets in the 2018 draft now has a .781 OPS in Brooklyn.

Kingsport Mets (23-19) 14, Bristol Pirates (18-24) 6 Box Score

The Mets offense jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to doubles from Jarred Kelenic and Luis Santana. The offense was largely silent in the second inning, but then exploded for 10 runs in the third inning. Seven Mets collected hits, six of whom collected multiple hits. Jarred Kelenic, Luis Santana, and Mark Vientos each drove in three runs.

The Mets pitching staff surrendered two earned runs, but four unearned runs were charged to relief pitcher Liam McCall. In 2.2 innings of work, the right-handed reliever allowed three hits and four walks while striking out two batters. In the eighth inning, fielding errors by first baseman Kenny Hernandez and second baseman Luis Santana plagued the Mets. The Pirates were able to scratch across four unearned runs in the inning.

GCL Nationals (17-22) 7, GCL Mets (20-20) 4 Box Score

The GCL Mets pitching staff failed to control the bats of the GCL Nationals. The Mets surrendered seven earned runs on 10 hits while striking out only two batters. Starting pitcher Jender De Jesus lasted only 2.2 innings while allowing five runs.

The GCL Mets offense could not do enough to support their pitching staff. The Mets jumped out to an early lead in the second inning, but quickly found themselves in a 5-1 deficit by the end of the third inning. Third baseman Jaylen Palmer collected three hits including one double. Designated hitter Cristopher Pujols recorded two hits on the night and outfielder Stanley Consuegra homered.

DSL Mets1 (33-21) 5, DSL Phillies Red (23-31) 2 Box Score

Two DSL Mets1 pitchers held the DSL Philles Red to only two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Benito Garcia tossed six innings of one-run ball, and reliever Edinson Diaz allowed one run in three innings while striking out four.

The DSL Mets2 jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the eighth inning, with the score knotted 2-2, the Mets plated three more runs to claim a 5-2 lead. Catcher Endy Rodriguez recorded a double and drove in a run, and first baseman Juan Loyo drove in two runs despite not recording a hit.

DSL Mets2 (27-27) 7, DSL Phillies (30-24) 3 Box Score

David Marcano started the game for DSL Mets2, and the right-hander allowed three runs in his five innings of work. Marcano lowered his ERA from 8.71 to 8.06 on the season. Reliever Daniel Guzman tossed three shutout innings in which he struck out five batters.

The DSL Mets2 offense came to life with seven runs on nine hits and 10 walks against DSL Phillies White. Designated hitter Jeison Rodriguez drew four walks while center fielder Eduardo Salazar collected four singles.
