MMN Recap: Evans Homers in High Scoring Vegas Win

Las Vegas (25-34) 11, New Orleans (27-31) 10   Box Score

The 51s did most of their damage in an eight-run third inning, aided by an error and a passed ball. Kaczmarski continued his hot streak since being activated from the DL, and is now batting an absurd .424 with a 1.053 OPS. Evans also contributed with an RBI single to temporarily tie the game at 1 in the third, as well a solo homer in the seventh to provide insurance, making it 11-7. Smith got back on track with a couple hits, although both of them were singles. Every 51s starting position player reached base at least twice except Johnny Monell, who reached base once with an RBI double in the big third inning.

After a rough finish to May, Flexen continued his struggles into his first start in June. He was pretty solid through the first four innings, with the only run scoring on a balk after the previous batter had reached on an error by the shortstop Evans. But Flexen got hit around in the fifth for four runs and then allowed a homer, a strikeout, and a single in the sixth before being taken out. He has struggled to keep the hits down really all season, even when he was pitching effectively, as batters have hit .323 off him this year and over .300 in all three months. Regnault had a good May but faltered near the end, and he struggled in his first outing of June, not quite finding his good command.

Hanhold had his second straight good outing after a rough Triple-A debut, allowing no runs and striking out three through two innings. Rhame, who has been the 51s closer lately, gave up a two-run homer in the ninth to nearly blow the 10-1 lead they once had, but he settled down to strike out the final two batters and earn his fifth save.

Harrisburg (28-27) 6, Binghamton (31-26) 5 Box Score

Harrisburg scored two runs off Binghamton starter Mickey Jannis in the fourth after Daniel Murphy (rehabbing microfracture knee surgery) and Drew Ward scored on a string of singles and walks.

Austin McGeorge came in for the sixth and allowed two runs to cross on a Kelvin Gutierrez bases-loaded single.

Tyler Bashlor began the ninth for Binghamton leading by one run, 5-4. He struck out Daniel Johnson to start things off, then walked Gutierrez. Daniel Murphy doubled to move two runners into scoring position.

A sacrifice fly scored Gutierrez and Ryder Ryan came in to face Taylor Gushue, who singled, scoring Murphy from second for the walk-off win.

The Rumble Ponies scored a run in the second after Kevin Taylor led off the frame with a triple and scored on a fielding error by Daniel Murphy on Mazeika’s grounder in the next at-bat.

They scored another in the fifth on a sequence of walks, a base hit, and an error on a Peter Alonso grounder (Murphy again), scoring Levi Michael.

They put up three runs in the sixth after Mazeika and John Mora began the inning with consecutive base hits. Tim Tebow singled to bring Mazeika home, then Jhoan Urena, pinch-hitting for Mickey Jannis, doubled to score Mora.

Levi Michael singled to bring Tebow home and the Rumble Ponies were up 5-2. They would put a runner on in the seventh but couldn’t capitalize, and did not have one baserunner after that.

Tampa (30-28) 6, St. Lucie (23-29) 2 Box Score

Tampa scored three runs in the first inning after Cornish issued a leadoff walk and stolen base to Ben Ruta, retired a batter, then gave up an RBI single to Alexander Palma to score Ruta.

Brandon Wagner hit a two-run home run in the next at-bat to give the Tarpons an early 3-0 lead. Cornish allowed another homer, a solo shot in the sixth, to Mandy Alvares.

McIlraith allowed two runs to cross in the eighth, putting things out of reach for the Mets. Alvarez singled with two outs, Dom Thompson-Williams tripled to score him in the next at-bat, and Ryan Lidge singled to bring him home, giving Tampa a 6-2 lead that would stand up.

The Mets put two runners on in the second (Desmond Lindsay hit-by-pitch, Winningham walk), but failed to score.

Andres Gimenez doubled to lead off the fourth inning, followed by a Michael Paez walk. With Lindsay up, Deivi Garcia threw a wild pitch, allowing Gimenez to score. Then Dash Winningham singled to bring home Paez.

The Mets only had one baserunner (Gene Cone bases-0n-balls in the seventh) from the fifth inning until Winningham doubled in the ninth.

Charleston (27-29) 5, Columbia (28-27) 1 Box Score

Charleston scored their lone run against Simon in the fourth inning after a Steven Sensley leadoff double and a Chris Hess RBI single and a throwing error by Fermin.

Carlos Hernandez allowed a double to Leonardo Molina in the seventh followed by an Eduardo Navas home run to put the RiverDogs ahead 3-0.

Jeff Diehl issued a one-out walk in the eighth before allowing a two-run homer to Dermis Garcia to put Charleston ahead 5-1.

The Fireflies didn’t manage their first hit until Raphael Gladu singled to lead off the bottom of the fourth. Fermin added a single in the fifth but was also left on base.

Matt Winaker tallied the only Columbia run of the night on his third homer of the season, a solo shot in the seventh.
