MMN Recap: Flexen Shines in Season Debut, Rosario Keeps Hitting

Iowa Cubs (17-21) 5, Las Vegas 51s (16-24) 4  Box Score

The Las Vegas 51s dug a big hole for themselves early, down 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth. Left fielder Phillip Evans got the 51s within three with a two-run shot in the fourth, his third of the year.

The 51s chipped away in the later innings, with Amed Rosario hitting an RBI single to center that scored Gavin Cecchini. Brandon Nimmo added an RBI double in the ninth to make the game interesting, putting the 51s within one, 5-4. Cecchini again scored from second, who doubled to begin the inning. But two groundouts sandwiched by a strikeout from Dominic Smith ended the 51s threat. Rosario now has five straight multi-hit games.

Starter Wilfredo Boscan was making his first start since May 1, after being placed on the disabled list on May 4 retroactive to May 2. Boscan didn’t fare well in his return, matching a season low in innings pitched (2.1) and tied another season worst in giving up five earned runs. Blake Beavan provided the 51s with some length out of the pen, tossing 3.2 innings with no runs scored and five strikeouts.

Altoona Curve (22-14) 8, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (19-14) 6  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies opened the scoring first, scoring three runs in the second inning with a sac-fly from Jio Mier, RBI single by starting pitcher Mickey Jannis, and RBI single from center fielder Champ Stuart. The Rumble Ponies wouldn’t score again until the seventh inning, when L.J. Mazzilli hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot. Kevin Taylor added an RBI single in the inning, and has recorded a hit in eight of thirteen May games.

Right hander Mickey Jannis made his seventh start of the season, and had a quality start of six innings while allowing three runs. He walked only one, just the second time this season he’s allowed one walk or less in a start. Tim Peterson entered the ninth and promptly gave up a leadoff single, followed by a two-run home run off the bat of Jordan Luplow, giving the Curve the 8-6 lead and eventual win.

St. Lucie Mets (18-22) 3, Lakeland Flying Tigers (19-21) 2, 10 innings Box Score

The St. Lucie Mets guaranteed at least a split with the Lakeland Flying Tigers in their four-game series, beating the Flying Tigers in ten innings. The Mets got on the board in the seventh, with a leadoff triple from shortstop J.C. Rodriguez, followed by a run scoring double from Jhoan Urena, his 14th of the season. Dale Burdick added a run scoring single on a line drive to center.

With the score tied at two in the tenth, right fielder Enmanuel Zabala worked a two-out walk, before John Morahit his second double of the game, driving in Zabala for the eventual winning run.

Right-hander Chris Flexen made his season debut after suffering a knee injury in spring training. Flexen went four innings and was sharp, allowing only one run on three hits. The Mets added Flexen to their 40-man roster back in November. Justin Dunn followed Flexen, pitching his best outing of the season, going five innings allowing just one run on three hits, with five strikeouts, picking up his second win of the year.

The Columbia Fireflies had the night off.
