MMN Recap: Gonzalez, Peterson Both Toss Eight Inning Gems

Round Rock (28-34) 18, Las Vegas (26-37) 7  Box Score

Smith had a solid night at the plate, driving in a run in the first with a double, but he’s still yet to really get going. Kevin Kaczmarski went only 1-5 to finally drop his average below .400, but that hit was a two-run double. He also had some defensive woes in left field the night after he misplayed a ball off the wall for an inside-the-park home run while playing center field. Borenstein and Asche homered, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the 51s went 1-10 with runners in scoring position.

It was an ugly defensive night all-around, including pitching and defense. Despite settling down in the third and fourth, Conlon was getting hit hard all night in his first start back with the Mets organization. He gave up four home runs and couldn’t get escape the fifth inning, throwing 96 pitches, although he would have thrown five innings with only eight runs allowed if Kaczmarski hadn’t dropped an easy pop-up.

Torres, who was just called up after posting a 1.71 ERA in Binghamton, didn’t have much either, giving up a monster home run on the first pitch he threw. He was able to get out of a jam in the fifth to mercifully limit the damage, but he gave up two more runs in the sixth. They kept him out there for the seventh, and he pitched around a couple two-out singles to allow no runs that inning.

Bautista pitched absolutely fine, but his defense completely failed him. Recently promoted second baseman Joey Wong missed a pop-up for a “single” and also made a throwing error on what should have been an inning-ending double play. Johnny Monell also had two more passed balls in the game to bring his season total to 10. Regnault pitched a very quick and easy inning as he looks to find consistency.

Trenton 9 (36-24), Binghamton 1 (33-28) Box Score

Yoenis Cespedes continued his rehab on Saturday with a 2-2 performance. He doubled twice in the first three innings,but then left the game with tightness in his right quad. Jeff McNeil was 0-for-3 in the game, but was removed for defense in the seventh inning with no reason given.

The ever-reliable Nasbil Crismatt got knocked around for Binghamton. He gave up eight through four innings against a solid Trenton lineup, his first terrible start of the year. Corey Taylor continues to impress in Binghamton, where he has had most of his success this year. Corey struggled in Las Vegas, but has posted a mid three ERA in Double-A.

Lakeland Tigers 1 (32-29), St. Lucie 0 (24-32) Box Score 

The Mets only recorded four hits on the night. Outside of Gimenez, Cone, Strom and Dimino, no one else recorded a hit. Dash Winningham and Michael Paez each walked.

Harol Gonzalez was the only Met to touch the bump on Saturday Night. He dominated through and through, only letting three batters reach. He only saw three over the minimum, and lowered his ERA to just a shade over two and a half. He recorded the loss due to the lack of offense.

Columbia 2 (30-29), Augusta 1 (35-25) F/10 Box Score

Walk-off!!! The Fireflies walked off in the tenth with a Quinn Brodey walk to complete a comeback over Augusta. Raphael Gladu extended his hitting streak to 23 games. He also has an on base streak of 28, closing in on Jeremy Vasquez‘s hold of longest-on base-streak. The team went 1-17 with runners in scoring position, wasting a lot of chances.

David Peterson stayed red hot for Columbia on Saturday. He went eight innings, a career high, and struck out double digits, something he hadn’t done yet as a pro. His control was pinpoint, not allowing a walk. He also didn’t allow a single fly ball out. He threw 95 pitches with 70 of them for strikes. Trey Cobb was dominant out of the pen, only letting one reach in his two innings of work, and recorded the win.

DSL Mets1 8 (3-4), DSL Twins 5 (4-3) Box Score

  • Malvin Nunez 2B: 3-5 (.412/.524/.412)
  • David Lozano SS: 4-5 (.320/.393/.400)

The Mets recorded eight runs on fifteen hits. Aside from Moises Gonzales, every starter recorded at least one hit.

  • Cesar Loaiza: 3.1 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 K (1-0, 1.59)

Loaiza got his first win of the season on Saturday. Nixon Silva was awarded his first career save.

DSL Brewers3 (5-2), DSL Mets2 2 (4-3) F/10 Box Score

Stanley Consuegra reached twice, having a single and a walk. The team recorded seven hits.

Guzman threw his best pro start, and went deep into the game based on DSL standards. Jefferson Escorcha had the save chance in the ninth.
