MMN Recap: James, Adolph Lead Brooklyn To Dominant Victory

Sacramento (51-79) 4, Las Vegas (63-67) 0  Box Score

Alonso has been a bit shakier lately, batting .184 over his last ten games, but is still wrapping up but has been a very strong August. Guillorme is batting .378 over his last ten.

  • LHP P.J. Conlon (L, 3-9, 6.88 ERA): 5.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 4 K
  • RHP Eric Hanhold (1-2, 6.06 ERA): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
  • LHP Kyle Regnault (3-1, 4.63 ERA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K

Conlon’s three starts since making two relief appearances have been a little better than what he was doing earlier in the year. Hanhold’s starting to figure it out in Vegas after a rough start and a DL stint. Regnault continued his dominant month of August in which he has a 0.77 ERA and .150 opponents batting average, along with 17 strikeouts in 11.2 innings.

Binghamton (61-69) 12, New Hampshire (71-57) 9  Box Score

Binghamton entered the ninth inning down by one run, but rallied for five runs on three home runs to take the lead. Urena has mostly had a disappointing season, but he had a huge game on Friday, reaching base five times and homering twice. Terdoslavich is hitting .351/.425/.597 in August. Gimenez left the game after the fifth inning and no reason has been given for his departure.

Dunn had one of the worst starts of his career as his allowed a career-high eight runs to score before he could make it through the fourth inning. If one positive can be taken from this outing, Dunn still struck out six batters in just 3.1 innings. Pobereyko was making his first appearance with Binghamton after a very good season with St. Lucie. Torres has been dominant in his first season as a full time reliever and he hasn’t just been lucky either, as indicated by his 2.02 FIP with Binghamton this season.

Fort Myers (63-65) 3, St. Lucie (51-75) 2  Box Score

St. Lucie’s offense struggled as they were held to just two runs on seven hits. After a day off on Friday, Wright played in his first full nine-inning game. He hasn’t quite found his hitting groove yet, but hasn’t struck out in his last four games. Paez is hitting .284/.360/.447 in 58 games since the All-Star break.

Cavallaro made his eighth start with St. Lucie and, despite only giving up two runs, struggled with his command. Despite only throwing five innings, Cavallaro still threw 102 pitches and walked four batters, both of which were season highs. Atkins has had eight straight appearances in which he has not allowed an earned run.

Columbia (59-64) 7, Asheville (58-69) 5  Box Score

Columbia’s strong offense performance was fueled largely by the top four hitters in the lineup, who went a combined 9-for-16 and drove in 5 runs. Manea hit his 11th home run of the season, which is very impressive considering the pitcher-friendly nature of the South Atlantic League and the fact the Manea had hit just one home run in his career before this season. Winaker is hitting .333/.415/.681 with six home runs in August.

Renteria started the game and had one his few rough starts since returning from the disabled list in July. Even with this start, Renteria still has a 31:4 K:BB ratio over his last 4 starts (25.0 innings pitched). O’Neil was dominant in his three inning relief appearance and now has 56 strikeouts in just 44 innings this season.

Brooklyn (35-30) 12, Connecticut (26-36) 1  Box Score

The Cyclones had a huge game offensively that included 14 hits (five of which went for extra bases) and nine walks. Adolph continued his impressive debut season by reaching base four times and recording three extra base hits. Adolph’s 11 triples lead the New York-Penn League and only one other player has more than four. Medina is hitting ,348/.400/.587 in August.

James had an outstanding game for the Cyclones as he needed just 93 pitches to make it through a career-high eight innings. While the lack of strikeouts for James (49 in 75.2 innings pitched this season) is somewhat concerning, it’s hard not to be impressed with James’ overall performance this season, both in Brooklyn and in his two spot starts in the upper minors. Hill has 22 strikeouts in 12.1 innings in his first professional season.

Burlington (22-41) 5, Kingsport (32-31) 1  Box Score

The Mets scored their only run in the first inning when Kelenic singled home Yoel Romero with one out. The offense was then held without another run for the rest of the game. Kelenic has had a hit in eight straight games and has had multiple hits in each of his last five games. He his hitting .333/.385/.542 so far in August and seems to have adjusted to the advanced competition faced in the Appalachian League.

Acosta pitched fairly well in his start as he only walked one batter and was able to limit the Royals to three runs over six innings. He has 46 strikeouts in 42.1 innings pitched this season. 2018 draftees, Hickey and Metoyer, combined to strikeout 5 over 2.2 scoreless relief innings.

GCL Nationals (23-28) 6, GCL Mets (23-29) 5  Box Score

This game was originally started last Sunday and was suspended due to rain in the seventh inning with the Mets losing 6-3. The team was able to get within one run due to some clutch hitting and baserunning by Palmer, who hit a home run as soon as the game resumed in the seventh and scored on an error on the catcher in the ninth. However, the late rally ended up falling just short.

  • RHP Zachary Hammer (L, 0-1, 33.75 ERA) 0.1 IP, 2 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, HB, K
  • RHP Ramon Guzman (5-2, 2.05 ERA) 2.2 IP, BB, 3 K

Hammer made his second professional appearance and it did not go well as could retire just one of the six batters he faced. Cespedes has not walked more than two batters in any of his last 12 outings.

GCL Mets (24-31) 4, GCL Nationals (23-32) 2  Box Score

The Mets came into the ninth inning with the game tied at 2, but were able to take the lead after two runs scored on errors. Palmer continued his impressive debut season by reaching base twice and stealing two bases. The New York native has a eight game hitting streak and is hitting .333/.444/.533 in August.

Mets pitchers struggled with control in this game, as they walked eight total batters, but were still able to hold the Nationals to two runs. Parra allowed his first professional run after throwing nine scoreless innings to begin his career.

DSL Mets1 (46-25) 4, DSL Angels (21-50) 0  Box Score

The Mets took advantage of four Angels errors to score four runs and take the victory in Friday’s game. Valerio is hitting .396/.483/.545 since July 27 and now has 16 steals in 21 attempts for the season.

Former Mets closer, Jenrry Mejia, continues to work his way back from suspension in the Dominican Summer League. He has been dominant in two appearances, albeit against competition featuring mostly teenagers who have never faced anything close to MLB-caliber pitching. Still, it is an improvement from his winter league performances of the last few seasons (his most recent appearances in professional baseball), in which he walked over 11 batters per nine innings.

DSL Mets2 (33-37) 3, DSL D-Backs2 (23-48) 1  Box Score

The Mets2 have just a .613 team OPS for the season, which ranks among the bottom of the Dominican Summer League, even the team’s record is floating around .500 for the season. The offense continued to struggle on Friday as the recorded just four hits and struck out a combined 16 times.

Marcano has shown major improvements in August (3.38 ERA, 16:11 K:BB) after an awful July (13.94 ERA, 4:13 K:BB). Armado has had two straight scoreless appearances as he looks to have a strong finish to a rough debut season.
