MMN Recap: Mauricio, Espino Pace GCL Offense in Win

Trenton (41-29) 16, Binghamton (34-36) 5 BOX SCORE

The Ponies were out of this one from the get-go. John Mora was the only player to record multiple hits. Josh Allen, the second basemen, doubled in a run in the sixth, his second. Tim Tebow, Joey Wong, Kevin Taylor and Jhoan Urena all recorded one hit a piece.

Marcos Molina took one for the team on Wednesday, as he gave up thirteen. He got rocked early, and there was no looking back. Austin McGeorge continued his rough season allowing two runs in 1.2 innings.

Dunedin (31-37) 5, St. Lucie (27-40) 4 F/11 BOX SCORE

The Mets came up on the short end of a duel with Dunedin on Wednesday. Winningham, who has been hitting a shade under .300 on the road this year, collected three hits on the night. He singled in the eighth, driving in his twenty-second run. Desmond Lindsay recorded a hit for the seventh time in nine games. It was his second multi-hit game in six days. Dan Rizzie, who is having a nice bounce back after struggling in May, also doubled. It was his only hit.

Gibbons, a twenty-five year-old Connecticut native, turned in a solid start. He only allowed two hits, but walks ended up hurting him, as three scored and were earned against him. His six strike outs tied a season high. Joseph Zanghi continued to be dominant in 2018 with three more scoreless innings of work. Adam Atkins took the loss.

Hudson Valley (3-3) 8, Brooklyn (4-2) 7 F/10 BOX SCORE

Brooklyn exploded for seven runs on Wednesday. Jose Brizuela homered again for Brooklyn, his second of the new season. DH Dionis Paulino had three hits on the game, one being a double. Brooklyn was unable to answer Hudson Valley’s rally in the ninth and tenth, as their bats fell flat in the late-goings.

Starter Kyle Wilson got knocked around in his season debut. He let four score over three and two thirds while striking out six. Ryan Selmer threw two scoreless in relief, holding onto the Brooklyn lead. Ronald Sanchez gave up the lead, resulting in a loss and a blown save.

Kingsport Mets (2-0) 8, Princeton Rays (0-2) 0 BOX SCORE 

The Mets had everything go right against Princeton as they slaughtered the Rays. Eight of the nine Mets in the lineup recorded a hit on Wednesday. Kenny Hernandez was the only Met to wear the collar, although he did walk. They scored eight in the eighth to win the game. The inning consisted of five RBI hits, three being extra bases.

Butto turned in a gem for Kingsport, not allowing a run in his first start. He lowered his career ERA to 1.29. Dedniel Nunez threw two scoreless in his season debut. He’ll look to bounce back following a rough 2017.

GCL Mets 9 (2-1), GCL Nationals 3 (0-2) Box Score

  • Sebastian Espino 2B: 2-3, BB, 2 R, SB, .500/.583/.500

Jhoander Saez had three this and scored three runs out of the leadoff spot. Wilmer Reyes had two hits including his first triple of the season. The Mets went 4-for-14 with runners in scoring position while scoring at least one run in five different innings.

Guzman threw four scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win in his stateside debut after eight runs in 9.2 innings in the DSL to begin the season.

The Mets had only five hits but walked 10 times. They failed to capilize on numerous scoring chances striking out 16 times and going just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

  • RHP Junior Santos –  4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, BB, 5 K (0-0, 3.60)

The 6’8” Santos has struck out 19 batters in 15 innings during his first pro season. Nelmerson Xavier Mariano Silvano Angela allowed his first runs of the season, three in an inning of work to raise his ERA to 2.61.

First baseman Wilfred Astudillo had the Mets only other hit of the game.

  • LHP Brailin Gonzalez – 5 IP, H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K (3-0, 2.63)
  • LHP Jefferson Escorcha – 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (0-1, 0.79)

Gonzalez, Escorcha and Daniel Guzman combined to allow only one hit (first inning single) while walking two and striking out 11. The 18-year-old Gonzalez has 21 strikeouts compared to only four walks in 13.2 innings this year.

Both Columbia and Las Vegas had the night off.
