MMN Recap: McNeil Plays Third Base, Collects Two Hits

Albuquerque (45-48) 14, Las Vegas (45-49) 5  Box Score

The 51s benefitted greatly from some poor Albuquerque defense early on along with a first inning three-run blast by Asche, as they scored five runs in the first two innings, with only one of the runs being earned. However, they were shut out for the rest of the game. McNeil started a new hitting streak as he continues to murder minor league pitching. He also drove in a run on a sac fly. Luis Guillorme‘s hot hitting was halted with an 0-5 day. Backup outfielder Patrick Biondi collected two singles in the loss.

Gagnon returned to the minors, where he had been on a solid stretch before his promotion to the Majors. He pitched okay, but took 99 pitches to get through five innings while also allowing two homers and a triple. Krol allowed two of Beck’s inherited runners to score, although a throwing error from third baseman Phillip Evans didn’t help the matter. Krol was charged with an unearned run, and has a very solid 3.00 ERA in 11 appearances with the 51s. Bautista, who has had a very up-and-down season, pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts as he attempts to try and put together a nice string of quality outings.

Akron (55-38) 9, Binghamton (43-48) 5  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies offense faced top Cleveland prospect, Triston McKenzie, and scored five runs on nine hits, with just less than half of those hits coming off the bat of Michael. Michael has had multiple hits in four of his last five games and is hitting .365/.459/.500 in July. His .846 OPS and nine home runs on the season are both career highs. Urena had been slumping in July and hadn’t had a hit in five games, but had a good game that included his sixth home run of the seas. Tim Tebow extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

After an excellent start to the season in St. Lucie and recording a brief, one start cameo in Las Vegas, Gonzalez made his Binghamton debut on Sunday afternoon. The final line doesn’t look good, but he was still able to pitch his way through six innings in his first start at Double-A. Nogosek continues to struggle since his promotion to Binghamton. After allowing 12 runs in 32.1 innings with St. Lucie, Nogosek has already allowed 12 in just four innings with the Rumble Ponies.

St. Lucie (37-53) 3, Palm Beach (49-39) 2  Box Score

With top prospect Andres Gimenez playing in the Futures Game, Carpio received a rare start at shortstop and hit leadoff for just the fourth time all season. He made the most of this opportunity as he homered to lead-off the game for St. Lucie. Carpio’s seven home runs are, by far, a career high (he’s previous high was 3) and, while the first few months of his season weren’t great, he’s hitting a fantastic .354/.380/.521 in July. Sanchez has a hit in all but one of his 11 games with St. Lucie and has struck out just once since being promoted to Advanced-A.

Kay continued his streak of strong starts with St. Lucie by allowing just two runs (both unearned) in six innings. In each of the three starts since he has been promoted to St. Lucie, Kay has thrown six or more innings and has given up no more than 2 earned runs. McGeorge and Pobereyko held on to the one run lead by combining to strike out five batters over three scoreless innings.

Columbia (44-45) vs. Lakewood (55-36)

Columbia’s game on Sunday afternoon against Lakewood was postponed due to rain. A doubleheader has been scheduled for Monday evening in order to make up the game.

Brooklyn (16-13) 6, Williamsport (11-17) 2  Box Score

The Cyclones scored six runs on ten hits in Sunday evening’s victory. Chambers now has three straight multi-hit games and has a 12:16 BB:K ratio on the season. Walter Rasquin went 1-for-4 with a walk in the sixth game of his rehab assignment with Brooklyn.

Wilson made his fifth start of the season and pitched fairly well, although four walks ran up his pitch count to 92 in the fifth inning. Oxford came into the game in relief and allowed an inherited runner to score, but limited the damage in the fifth inning to just that one run. Colon has allowed just one run and has struck out 21 over 13 innings in 2018.

Elizabethton (16-8) 11, Kingsport (13-11) 10  Box Score

Kingsport’s offense had a huge night, with every player in the lineup except for Phil Capra having at least one hit and seven players reaching base at least twice. Kelenic continued his ridiculously hot start to his professional career and now has eight extra base hits in just 18 pro games. Garay got the Mets on the board with a two run home run in the second inning and has now homered in three straight games. Beracierta now has an impressive 13:8 BB:K ratio on the season.

Cleveland started the game and had a pretty good outing, even though he only struck out a single batter. While Cleveland’s ERA looks very good, it is concerning that he has walked more batters than he has struck out so far in 2018 (15 walks compared to only 11 strikeouts. The Kingsport bullpen struggled mightily after Cleveland left the game, as they gave up nine runs on nine hits and three walks in just four innings.

GCL Nationals (9-14) 8, GCL Mets (14-10) 2  Box Score

The Mets offense struggled greatly in Sunday’s game against the Nationals, as they scored just two runs on four hits. The team failed to take advantage of their limited opportunities as well as the Mets were just 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Mauricio was hitless for just the second game of his professional career, but he did draw the second walk of his career.

Guzman had looked great in his first few starts in the Gulf Coast League, but he struggled quite a bit in this start. Guzman walked a career-high five batters and only struck out one in four and a third innings. This start ended Guzman’s six start streak of allowing two runs for less. Taylor has allowed just one earned run in 12 innings pitched this season.
