MMN Recap: Prevost Faces Minimum in Complete Game Shutout

Round Rock (27-34) 12, Las Vegas (26-36) 5  Box Score

Cody Asche got the 51s on the board in the first with a ball that was misplayed by left fielder Willie Calhoun for a triple. They retook the lead in the third when Colton Plaia scored on a passed ball, and added onto it with a Zach Borenstein RBI single, and he later scored on a Kivlehan caught stealing. Down 6-4, Evans, who recently cleared waivers, returned with a home run, but it wasn’t enough.

The inconsistent Gagnon pitched pretty well, allowing only two hits, but is still yet to earn a win in 12 starts with the 51s. Purke pitched much better than usual, throwing a lot more strikes than he has been in many of his rough outings this year.

Hanhold, however, just didn’t have it last night. He was throwing hard, but constantly getting behind batters and when he did throw it in the zone, it usually got hit hard. Even some of his outs were hard. He ended up getting the loss.

Baumann came in to try and hold the score at 7-5 with two outs in the ninth, but he allowed a two-run homer and hit a batter before he came out with what appeared to be some sort of injury. To try and get the final out, backup catcher Jeff Glenn made yet another pitching appearance, and he gave up a two-run shot and a solo blast before finally allowing a deep fly ball that didn’t quite make it out to mercifully end the inning.

Trenton (35-24) 10, Binghamton (33-27) 2  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies had a rough night at the plate as they could score just two runs on six hits. Both runs scored on Alonso’s sixth inning single. Cespedes played in his first rehab game and took two at-bats as the designated hitter. McNeil has continued his hot hitting in the month of June and now has a .400/.483/.720 slash line for the month.

Binghamton pitchers had a rough night as they allowed 10 runs on 17 hits (including five home runs) in the games. Molina allowed three of the five home runs, but, fortunately for him, they were all solo homers. He managed to strand eight runners on base through his six innings, so his line could have looked a lot worse. Uceta and McGeorge combined to allow seven runs over the final two innings, effectively putting the game out of reach. Both relievers have failed to match their 2017 dominance so far this season.

St. Lucie (24-31) 2, Lakeland (31-29) 0  Box Score

St. Lucie’s offense scattered nine hits in this game, but could push across just the two runs. Both runs scored in the sixth inning, in which an Andres Gimenez sacrifice fly brought home the first run and a Michael Paez single brought home the second. Strom and Cone had been engulfed in lengthy slumps coming into the game (both had an OPS below .400 in June), so it is great to see both of them have three hits.

Prevost had the best start of his career as he needed just 97 pitches to complete the one-hit shutout. Prevost has quietly pitched very well in his first season back from Tommy John surgery. The first batter of the game singled off Prevost, he would then retired 26 in a row and face the minimum.

He made his previous start with Binghamton and struggled, but in his last five starts with St. Lucie, Prevost has given up 5 earned runs over 35.1 innings pitched.

Columbia (29-29) 4, Augusta (35-24) 1  Box Score

Columbia;s offense scored four runs on eight hits in Friday’s game against Augusta. The team was held scoreless until the sixth inning, in which a Sanchez sacrifice fly tied the game at one. Fermin’s RBI double in the seventh gave Columbia the lead and they broke it open with Sanchez’s two run home run in the eighth. Sanchez’s home run was his third of the season, which ties his previous career high. With two more hits in this game, Gladu extended his hitting streak to an excellent 22 games.

Kay has been inconsistent in his first year back from Tommy John surgery and had a rough time in his previous start, but he was very good in this start. Kay gave up just one run, which was on a home run in the fourth inning. Hernandez made his second appearance since returning from the disabled list and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings. Villines continues to rack up strikeouts and, despite his high ERA, he has a 50:5 K:BB ratio in 2018.

DSL Nationals (5-1) 5, DSL Mets 1 (2-4) 4  Box Score

  • Malvin Nunez 2B: 2-for-3, R, BB, .333/.500/.333
  • Juan Loyo C: 2-for-4, RBI, .375/.444/.375
  • David Lozano 3B: 1-for-4, R, .200/.304/.300

The Mets scored four runs on seven hits in their loss to the Nationals. Despite having a lot of baserunners, the offense failed to fully take advantage and ended up running themselves out of innings as they were caught stealing three times and picked off once.

16-year-old Santos made his second start of the season and, while he gave a high number of hits, struck out four batters without walking a batter. Isturiz came out of the bullpen and pitched three innings without allowing a hit.

DSL Mets 2 (4-2) 7, DSL Cardinals Red (3-3) 6  Box Score

The Mets scored seven runs on ten hits and six walks in their victory against the Cardinals. Consuegra, one the Mets top signings from the 2017 international signing period, hit the first home run of his professional career, a two run blast in the third inning.

Martinez was outstanding out of the bullpen in this game, as he struck out five of the six batters he faced.
