The offense started the game off slow, with the only baserunner in the first three innings coming on a Johnny Monell double, but Borenstein and Brentz led off the fourth with back-to-back home runs to put the 51s up 2-1. Down 5-2, they started to chip away in the eighth with a Brentz RBI double to make it 5-3, but Smith grounded out to end the rally. Even with last night’s 0-for, Smith’s on-base numbers are still very good, but his power hasn’t quite been there yet. He has just a .123 ISO, and especially being a first baseman, the Mets are hoping for much more from him in the power department.

In the ninth inning, Cecchini singled to load the bases with no outs as he extended his hitting streak to eleven games. Guillorme then tied it up with a two-run single, and later in the inning, Borenstein hit a walk-off single to finish the comeback and send everyone home happy. While Guillorme is not a power hitter at all, his on-base and contact skills have been heating up as of late, and he is starting to look more like the guy who hit .283 with a .376 OBP last year. He is 7-for-19 with seven RBI in his last five games.

Gagnon had another mediocre start, allowing three home runs, although he did strike out seven. Regnault pitched two very strong innings as he looks to get his season back on track and replicate his great results from the past few years. Taylor gave up a run and has produced somewhat mixed results since getting the promotion to Las Vegas, while Smith has been mostly solid since also earning his promotion.

Akron (14-11) 5, Binghamton (12-11) 2 Box Score

The Rumble Ponies didn’t amount to much on Wednesday. Tyler Moore drove in the only runs for the team, coming from his second double of the year. Peter Alonso only recorded a single, dropping his average below .400 though he extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The Ponies only recorded six hits on the day, all coming from a different player. They’ll continue to look for a third bat outside of Jeff McNeil and Peter Alonso to contribute.

Marcos Molina took one for the team last night. The right-handed starter surrendered five and lugged through six and a third innings. He gave up ten base runners, nine coming off hits. One of those hits was a Connor Marabell home run. Molina only struck two out, as he didn’t have his best stuff against Akron. He would need to improve off that if he wishes to continue back to AAA. David Roseboom got four outs to keep the deficit where it was.

Charlotte (12-14) 13, St. Lucie (11-14) 3 Box Score

Not much went right for the Mets on Wednesday. Only able to muster five hits, most of the offense came through catcher Brandon Brosher, who looks the shake off a .140 start. Gimenez contributed a RBI single, and that was all of the scoring for St. Lucie.

Gabriel Llanes, much like Marcos Molina, took one on the chin. He surrendered TEN runs in three plus innings, with only eight of them being earned. He also didnt help himself out by walking two. McIlraith threw gasoline on the fire by giving up three and allowing as many hits as he recorded outs. The positives, however, were three scoreless innings combined from Ryder Ryan and Adam Atkins.

The Fireflies had everything going on Wednesday afternoon. Nine runs is a season-high, and they recorded ten hits. Matt Winaker hit his first home run of the year in the fourth inning. Jeremy Vasquez and Hansel Morenorecorded the only other extra base hits in the game for Columbia. Jeremy Vasquez continued his hot start, getting on base again twice, extending his on base streak to a whopping 25 games.

• LHP Aaron Ford: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB, 1-0, 0.00

Renteria turned in his best start of the year for the Fireflies. He allowed only five hits on the day, only of them being extra bases. He struck out five, with most of his outs coming with the ball being put in play. Aaron Fordcontinued his scoreless start to the year recording four outs to end the game.
