MMN Recap: Ronny Mauricio, Francisco Álvarez Impress at the Plate

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (3-1) 7, Syracuse (1-3) 3, F/6 Box Score

Catcher Martin Cervenka hit his second home run of the year to get Syracuse on the board in the second inning. Cervenka’s two out home run came two batters after Thompson doubled. Shortstop Wilfredo Tovar drove in left fielder Jake Hager with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to score the Mets’ third and final run of the rain-shortened game. 

Zamora stepped up to the mound for his first appearance of the season shortly after Syracuse scratched scheduled starter Thomas Szapucki. Zamora struggled early, giving up a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning. In the second, veteran catcher Robinson Chirinos took Zamora deep for a solo home run. An inning later, Zamora allowed two hits and three walks as the RailRiders tagged him for four more runs. Szapucki entered in relief in the third inning. He allowed four hits, walked three and struck out five in 3.2 innings.

Akron (4-0) 8, Binghamton (0-4) 3 Box Score

Third base prospect Mark Vientos, 21, reached base three times on Friday night. The 2017 second round pick singled in the first and drew two walks. Will Toffey drove in the first Binghamton run of the game, hitting a single in the second to score Jeremy Vasquez. Toffey came around to score on a Carlos Cortes sacrifice fly.

Starting pitcher Adam Oller took the loss, pitching only two innings and allowing five runs. Mitchell pitched 2.1 strong innings, allowing only one base runner on a walk. Zanghi struggled again in his second outing of the season. The reliever allowed four hits and three runs, including a solo home run in the seventh. Gordon entered after the home run in the seventh and retired the final four Akron hitters.

Asheville (3-1) 13, Brooklyn (1-3) 7 Box Score

Baty, a first round pick in 2019, singled in the first to drive in the first run of the night. Top shortstop prospect Ronny Mauricio was key to the Cyclones offense on Friday, and he slugged a two-run shot in the third inning for his first home run of the season. Later on, Mauricio hit a one-out double in the seventh inning, then came around to score on a Baty single. In the eighth, with two men on, Mauricio doubled to score both base runners. Jake Mangum, a fourth round pick in 2019, made his season debut at DH and struck out three times.

Vilera, making his first start of the season for St. Lucie, took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first before promptly giving up four runs. The righty allowed the first six Asheville hitters to reach base, including former Mets prospect Luis Santana. In the second, Asheville center fielder Alex McKenna hit a one-out solo home run off Vilera. Four batters later, Santana drove in two more runs on a ground ball single to left field. Asheville scored nine runs off Vilera to chase the starter after three innings of work.

St. Lucie (3-1) 7, Jupiter (1-3) 4 Box Score

Star catching prospect Francisco Álvarez, in St. Lucie’s Friday night lineup as the designated hitter, hit his first home run of the year in the bottom of the first to open the scoring for the Mets. With the game tied at two in the fifth, shortstop Branden Fryman hit a two-run home run to give St. Lucie a 4-2 lead. After Jupiter tied the game at 4, Álvarez led off the seventh with a double, and he came around to score the go-ahead run on a single b y first baseman Warren Saunders.

Santos got the nod for St. Lucie and allowed a leadoff triple to start the game. The first Jupiter run of the game scored on a fielding error by second baseman LT Struble. After getting two outs, Santos walked a batter and gave up a run-scoring single to give Jupiter a 2-0 lead. Santos settled in to pitch scoreless innings in the second and third, touching 96 with his fastball. Lasko allowed two runs over four innings in relief to earn the win. Taveras and Santos chipped in scoreless innings to close out the night.
