Columbus (24-17) 8, Syracuse (24-18) 2  Box Score

With eight hits and three walks, the Mets offense had opportunities to score more than two runs in Sunday’s game, but they went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Both of the team’s runs scored in the third inning when Thompson and Tebow hit back-to-back solo home runs. This was Tebow’s first home run in what has otherwise been a dismal first two months in Triple-A. Davis’ 14 stolen bases are tied for the International League lead.

Coleman had looked pretty good this season prior to this start, but gave up three home runs in just four innings and saw his ERA jump up from 3.06 to 4.21. Taylor spent about three weeks on the Injured List, but has otherwise been very good, going multiple innings in most of his outings and producing a large number groundballs. Hanhold has been somewhat disappointing out of the bullpen so far as he has a 1.65 WHIP and just a 14:12 K:BB ratio.

Binghamton (23-15) 7, Trenton (23-16) 1  Box Score

  • Luis Carpio 2B: 2-for-3, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, .667/.800/1.667
  • Jason Krizan DH: 2-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, K, .152/.273/.212
  • Will Toffey 3B: 2-for-3, R, 2 BB, .216/.394/.333

The Rumble Ponies offense had big afternoon that featured seven runs, eleven hits, and ten walks. Carpio was making his Double-A debut after dominating the Florida State League for two months and reached base four times while also crushing a seventh inning home run. Though it feels like he’s been around forever, Carpio is still just 21 years old and has reasserted himself as a prospect with his strong performance since the middle of last season. Toffey has been in slump this month as he has just a .634 OPS in May, but still knows how to draw a walk considering he still has a .373 OBP over that span. Andres Gimenez, after showing signs of heating up a couple of weeks ago, has fallen into another slump and is just 1-for-16 in his last four games.

Vargas was making his first rehab start coming back from a hamstring injury and had a successful first outing. While he didn’t have the best control, Vargas did throw 74 pitches and only gave up one run. Uceta came into the game in the fifth inning and fired three perfect relief innings. Uceta was injured for much of last season and was mediocre when healthy, so his prospect stock was a bit down, but he has been excellent thus far in 2019. The same can be said about Nogosek who has given up just two earned runs in 19.0 innings, although control continues to be a concern for him.

St. Lucie Mets (22-19) 8, Fort Myers (25-17) 6  Box Score

The Mets offense rallied in the ninth inning to secure an exciting victory in Sunday’s game. Headed into the final frame down 6-4, St. Lucie had six straight batters reach base to begin the inning and would end up with four runs and the lead. Every player in the lineup except for Blake Tiberi recorded at least one hit in this game. Rodriguez is hitting .317/.378/.439 so far in May. Cortes has been similarly hot and after a slow start in April, he is now hitting .308/.373/.538 in May.

Lockett was making his first start of the season after dealing with elbow soreness since spring training. He struggled in this rehab start and will likely have another start or two with St. Lucie before joining the Syracuse rotation. McIlraith made his second appearance out of the St. Lucie bullpen after he was dealing with an injury to begin his season. Shaw has looked good in his transition to the bullpen and has 17 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.

Columbia (16-27) 9, Rome (21-22) 8  Box Score

It may have taken ten innings, but the Fireflies offense came alive to secure a very impressive victory. Five players in the starting lineup had at least two hits and seven of the team’s 14 hits went for extra bases. Vientos has really been heating up recently with a five game hitting streak and four extra base hits in the last three games. Vientos has started slow in his previous seasons as well, so it is not surprising to see his impressive bat come alive after having some time to adjust to the league. Molina, who drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning, continues to rake upon joining the Mets organization. As a 23 year old signed out of Cuba, he seems far too advanced for the South Atlantic League and should see a fairly quick promotion if he keeps this up.

Taveras struggled in this start for Columbia as he could only strike out a single batter and would give up two home runs before being pulled after four innings. Zabaleta was hurt by an error in this outing, leading to a blown save, but has otherwise been excellent in 2019. He has a 21:2 K:BB ration for the season.
