Memphis (67-38) 8, Las Vegas (50-55) 3 Box Score

  • Peter Alonso 1B: 1-5, .205/.322/.465
  • Dominic Smith LF: 2-3, RBI, BB, K, .265/.344/.382
  • Jose Lobaton C: 2-4, RBI, .343/.389/.537

Alonso singled to extend his hitting streak to five games, while not striking out which has been a problem for him since making the jump to Triple-A. Smith had his second straight multi-hit night.

  • LHP P.J. Conlon (L, 3-7, 7.26 ERA): 5.0 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 4 BB, 2 K
  • LHP Kyle Regnault (3-1, 5.59 ERA): 2.0 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 4 K
  • LHP Ian Krol (2-0, 3.29 ERA): 1.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, K
  • RHP Colton Plaia (0-0, 1.80 ERA): 1.0 IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

A contact pitcher like Conlon is inevitably going to have trouble with the thin Vegas air, but Conlon has failed to find any kind of consistency of quality outings. He has an 8.46 ERA in four July starts. He walked four last night compared to just two strikeouts, and ended up with a 13-13 ratio for the month. Regnault has given up runs in four out of his last five outings and five out of his last seven as he also struggles to find consistency. Krol has been very solid with the 51s outside of a few hiccups. The 51s went with their backup catcher Plaia to pitch the ninth, his fifth pitching appearance of the season. He has given up just one run total in the five appearances.

Binghamton (49-55) 5, Altoona (54-47) 0  Box Score

Binghamton’s offense had a solid night as they went 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position and pushed across five runs on 11 hits. Toffey is off to a strong start to his Mets career, although he has struck out eight times in five games with Binghamton. Terdoslavich is hitting .390 over his last 10 games. Pitcher Mickey Jannis helped his own cause offensively with a RBI single in the 5th inning that gave the Rumble Ponies a 1-0 lead.

Jannis had his best start of the season as he needed just 102 pitches to get through a season high 7.1 innings and had his first scoreless outing of the year. Roseboom struck out four of the five batters he faced as he continues to dominate Double-A. Over his last three appearances, Roseboom has struck out eight batters in five scoreless innings.

Charlotte (52-47) 6, St. Lucie (40-60) 0  Box Score

St. Lucie’s offense was non-existent as the team had a total of just five baserunners in Friday’s game. The couldn’t take advantage of their limited opportunities either, going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Paez’s double extended his hitting streak to eight games and he is hitting .274/.374/.476 in July. Recent call-ups, Vasquez, Raphael GladuBlake Tiberi, and Quinn Brodey have all struggled in a small sample size since their promotions and each has a sub-.600 OPS with St. Lucie.

Taylor entered the game with a stretch of nine straight starts without allowing more than three runs, but he struggled in this outing. Taylor tied a career-high with five walks and threw only half of his 86 pitches for strikes as he was knocked out of the game in the fourth inning. McIlraith and McGeorge were both solid out of the bullpen, allowing one run over 5.1 innings.

Augusta (51-52) 2, Columbia (48-53) 1  Box Score

The Fireflies were held without a run for the first nine innings before Alfonzo singled home the first run of the game in the tenth. Fermin had been mired in a 2-for-32 slump, so hopefully his three-hit night will represent the beginning of another hot streak.

Renteria had his third consecutive scoreless start since coming off the disabled list in mid-July, and this was the deepest he’s gone into a game May 9. While he only struck out one batter, Renteria only needed 57 pitches to get through five shoutout innings. Campos came into the game and was dominant for just over four innings, tying a career high with nine strikeouts. Unfortunately, he was charged with two unearned runs in the tenth inning and ended up receiving the loss.

Brooklyn (22-18) 7, West Virginia (15-25) 1  Box Score

Every player in the Cyclones’ lineup had at least one hit in Friday night’s game and the team went a combined 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Cortes extended his hitting streak to seven games with his two-hit performance. Rodriguez finished the game a home run short of the cycle.

  • RHP Kyle Wilson (W, 1-3, 3.86 ERA) 7.0 IP, 3 H, BB, 8 K
  • RHP Yeudy Colon (3-0, 0.52 ERA) 2.0 IP, R, 2 BB, 3 K

Wilson needed just 90 pitches to make it through seven shutout innings in what was the best start of his professional career. Wilson set career-highs in both strikeouts and innings pitched and didn’t allow a run for the first time all season. He has quietly put together a fairly impressive season so far for Brooklyn and currently has a 35:11 K:BB ratio through 7 starts. Colon has struck out 24 batters and has given up just one earned run through 24.1 innings pitched in 2018.

Kingsport (18-17) 8, Burlington (10-26) 0  Box Score

Vientos’ huge night provided Kingsport with more than enough offense to take Friday night’s game against the Royals. Vientos drove home seven of his team’s eight runs and had three of their seven hits. He now has six home runs in 2018, four of which have come in the last six games. Jarred Kelenic‘s struggles in the Appalachian League continued, as he went 0-for-3, although he did have two walks in the game.

Taveras’ strong season continued with six scoreless innings in his third start with Kingsport. Taveras has given up three earned runs or less in every start this season and has gone at least five innings in all but one of his starts.

GCL Mets (19-14) 4, GCL Cardinals (22-10) 2  Box Score

The Mets scattered 10 hits in Friday afternoon’s game against the Cardinals and were able to push across four runs. The winning run scored in the tenth inning on a bunt single by Mena. Mauricio is hitting .329/.363/.553 so far in July.

One year and one day after undergoing Tommy John surgery, Kuhns made his return to the mound and pitched a scoreless inning. Kuhns had most recently pitched out of Columbia’s bullpen in 2017, when he had a 2.10 ERA and struck out 37 batters in 25.2 innings. Otanez came into the game in the second inning and had what was essentially a normal start as he pitched five innings. He didn’t strike out many batters, but Otanez was able to limit the Cardinals to just one run. Woods-Richardson came into the game in the ninth inning to make his second pro appearance and pitched two scoreless innings.

DSL Nationals (24-23) 3, DSL Mets1 (27-19) 2  Box Score

The Mets had plenty of opportunities to score in this 11-inning game, but they went an atrocious 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position. The first run scored on a ground out in the fourth inning to give the Mets a one run lead. Down two runs in the 11th inning, the Mets scored one run on a wild pitch, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

German had his best start of the season as he struck out six without walking any batters in six innings. He has walked one batter or less in each of his last four starts. Guzman has walked almost twice as many batters as he’s struck out, but has managed an excellent 2.13 ERA in 25.1 innings this season.

DSL Cardinals Red (26-20) 15, DSL Mets2 (22-25) 5  Box Score

While three Mets hitters had multi-hit games, the team as a whole had just seven hits and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

There aren’t many positives to be taken from the Mets’ combined pitching performance. Each of the four Mets pitchers allowed multiple runs and Juan Martinez was the only pitcher to strike out more batters than he walked.
