Syracuse (32-34) 6, Charlotte (36-29) 5 Box Score

The Syracuse offense batted around and scored five runs in the first inning before going mostly quiet for the rest of the night. Every starter, outside of Tim Tebow, had at least one hit on the night.

  • LHP Justin Wilson: 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB | 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP
  • RHP Walker Lockett: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K, 1 BB | 0-1, 3.28 ERA, 1.22 WHIP
  • RHP Ryley Gilliam: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 K, 0 BB, Blown Save, Win | 1-0, 6.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP
  • RHP Paul Sewald: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 0 BB, Save | 2-1, 4.00 ERA, 1.44 WHIP

Justin Wilson served as the “opener” for the second time in the last three games. Despite allowing a run on two hits, manager Tony DeFrancesco declared that he “looked good” and that Wilson would head for the airport after the game despite the next few games being at home. The game’s scheduled starter, Walker Lockett, was solid once again and came within one out of his fourth straight quality start. Gilliam struck out the only batter he faced in the top of the seventh inning but got into trouble in the eighth inning allowing two doubles and a single to allow the Charlotte Knights to tie the game. He would end up with the win though as the Mets were able to take the lead back in the bottom half of the eighth and Paul Sewald closed the door in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Trenton (36-25) 4, Binghamton (33-27) 1 Box Score

The Rumble Ponies was shut down once again by the Trenton Thunder pitching being held to only five hits on the night. The only run was scored in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Toffey to drive in Mazeika who had walked earlier in the inning.

  • RHP Tommy Wilson: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB, Loss | 0-3, 7.64 ERA, 1.70 WHIP
  • RHP Adonis Uceta: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB | 3-2, 2.15 ERA, 0.92 WHIP

Wilson turned in one of his better pitching performances of the season holding the top hitting team in the league (in terms of OPS) to only two runs on five hits. Uceta on the other hand had his first bad appearance in over a month. After walking the lead-off hitter, he put a pitch right down the middle that was sent over the wall for a two run home run to give the Thunder a 4-1 lead. He would settle in after that retiring six of the next seven batters he faced before the game was called early due to rain.

St. Lucie (32-34) 3, Clearwater (36-30) 2 Box Score

Zanon provided all the offense the Mets would need in this one launching a three run home run over the left center field wall in the top of the fifth inning to give the team a 3-2 lead. Zanon has been red-hot lately with a .333 AVG (12-for-36) six runs, three homers, and nine RBI’s over his last ten games including five multi-hit games.

  • LHP Kevin Smith: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 K, 0 BB, Win | 4-4, 3.49 ERA, 1.31 WHIP
  • RHP Ezequiel Zabaleta: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB, Save | 1-0, 2.08 ERA, 0.85 WHIP

Smith bounced back nicely from the worst start of his career last time out to give St. Lucie a solid five inning performance allowing only two runs on three hits. The trio of Zabaleta, Darwin Ramos, and Joe Cavallero held things down after that tossing a combined four innings allowing only one hit while striking out six. Zabaleta in particular has been superb since being promoted to Port St. Lucie on May 24th. In his short time with the club he has already racked up four saves and a win while holding opponents to a .146 AVG.

Lexington (34-32) 10, Columbia (24-39) 5 Box Score

Mauricio continued his hot streak yesterday with his fifth multi-hit performance in the last ten games. During that span, Mauricio is has a .364 AVG with only seven strikeouts in his forty-five plate appearances (15.5% K rate).

  • RHP Colin Holderman: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 K, 2 BB | 3-1, 3.89 ERA, 1.33 WHIP
  • RHP Alec Kisena: 2.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 K, 1 BB | 0-2, 6.08 ERA, 1.82 WHIP
  • RHP Chris Viall: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 1 BB | 0-1, 6.52 ERA, 1.71 WHIP

Holderman’s start was cut short after only two innings for an undisclosed reason. It should be noted that he was struggling with his command during his two innings of work and needed two mound visits in the first inning as he walked two batters and only 21 of his 40 pitches were thrown for strikes. He was reportedly looking at his finger multiple times so blister issues could have occurred.

DSL Phillies Red (7-3) 12, DSL Mets1 (6-4) 7 Box Score

Polanco continued his hot start to the season with his fifth multi-hit game in the first ten games of the DSL Season. Not to be outdone by his teammates, four other DSL Mets1 players racked up multi-hit games as well.

  • RHP Ronny Rincones: 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 K, 0 BB | 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.46 WHIP
  • LHP Brandon Sanchez: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 K, 2 BB, Blown Save | 0-0, 4.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP
  • RHP Williams Valencia: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 K, 3 BB, Loss | 0-2, 7.04 ERA, 1.96 WHIP

After a perfect showing his last time out, Rincones followed it up with another superb outing allowing only one hit through 4.2 innings of work although he did allow two unearned runs to score due to an error by the catcher.

DSL Cardinals Red (6-5) 4, DSL Mets2 (5-6) 2 Box Score

It was a quiet night for the DSL Mets2 offense as they could only produce two hits on the night.

  • RHP Erickson Ortega: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 5 K, 0 BB, Loss | 0-1, 0.00 ERA, 1.58 WHIP
  • RHP Antonio Villalba: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 5 K, 1 BB | 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 0.72 WHIP
  • RHP Jesus Rivas: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 2 BB | 1-0, 6.75 ERA, 1.80 WHIP

Despite the trio missing plenty of bats, whenever the Cardinals put runners on, the pitching staff was attacked by a NASCAR style race around the bases. Between the three pitchers and catcher Derweis Troconiz, the team allowed six stolen bases including one double steal.
