MMN Recap: Wright, Bruce Each Have Two Hits With St. Lucie

El Paso (73-52) 8, Las Vegas (61-65) 7   Box Score

Borenstein has started to slump this month but got two hits including an RBI single in the sixth. Alonso is also working to get out of a slump, and is in a 2-26 skid. Hopefully it’s just a brief period of regression after being insanely hot for a couple weeks. Brentz has now homered in three straight games and is slugging .677 since he came off the disabled list. Kivlehan has also been on a power surge, with six homers in his last seven games. He’s batting .327 with an .885 slugging in the month of August.

Crismatt struggled again, and didn’t make it through the third inning despite only throwing 52 pitches. His numbers lately have been slightly less ugly, but he still hasn’t been good and has struggled to find any kind of consistency for Las Vegas after pitching well in Binghamton. Strangely, he has actually pitched worse on the road, with an 11.29 ERA compared to a 6.64 ERA in the hitter-friendly Cashman Field.

Regnault finally seems to be figuring things out after a very long stretch of mediocrity and inconsistency. He’s been more like the Regnault of the past, with just one run allowed in his last ten innings, to go along with a .171 opponents batting average, a 0.60 WHIP, and 15 strikeouts compared to no walks. He’s been flat-out dominant this month. Bautista has given up two runs in back-to-back appearances, while Rhame has made just two minor league appearances in August, both scoreless outings. Beck blew the save and allowed a walkoff single, as he continues to either pitch great or implode seemingly every time he pitches with the 51s.

Binghamton (60-65) 5, Reading (59-65) 2  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies were held without a run until the eighth inning, in which they rallied to take the lead. All five of the team’s runs were scored that inning, which started with three straight walks and was capped off by a two run homer from Toffey. Mazeika is hitting .360/.448/.520 in August.

McGowan made his fourth start for Binghamton and pitched decently for five innings. The bullpen was excellent in relief of McGowan, keeping the team in the game by keeping Reading off the board for the final four innings. Zanghi has not allowed a baserunner in his last three appearances.

St. Lucie (51-71) 5, Dunedin (62-63) 3  Box Score

St. Lucie’s offense had a solid game on Sunday afternoon, scoring five runs on twelve hits. Wright played five innings at third base in his sixth rehab game and collected his first two hits of the season. Jay Bruce had five at bats as the DH and singled twice. Lindsay is hitting .333/.385/.583 since returning from the disabled list.

Gibbons had another solid start for St. Lucie and now has a 1.78 ERA in four August starts. Atkins has a 1.76 ERA with a 22:4 K:BB ratio over his last ten appearances (15.1 innings pitched).

Columbia (57-63) 7, Hagerstown (48-72) 5  Box Score

The Fireflies offense had a big game by scoring seven runs on ten hits. Moreno broke the scoreless tie with a two run home run in the third inning, his sixth of the season. Moreno has been turning the power on recently as he now has a .508 slugging percentage for the month of August. Fermin has struggled greatly over the last two months, but has had multiple hits in two of his last three games.

Debora has allowed two earned runs or less in six of his last seven appearances. O’Neil has 51 strikeouts in 41.0 innings this season.

Brooklyn (34-26) 10, Hudson Valley (34-26) 2  Box Score

Every player in the Cyclones lineup had at least one hit and seven players had multiple hits in the 10-run, 19-hit offensive explosion. Cortes continued his hot streak and is now hitting .358/.397/.528 in August. Senger has a .976 OPS between Kingsport and Brooklyn in his first professional season. Dylan Tice, who was recently signed as a minor league free agent, is now 6-for-14 in four games with the Cyclones.

Wilson continued his recent stretch of dominance by striking out five batters and giving up just one earned run over five innings. Over his last three starts, Wilson has given up just one earned run and eight hits in 17 innings. He also has a 24:2 K:BB ratio and has lowered his ERA from 4.82 to 3.20 over that span. Mitchell has a 9:1 K:BB ratio in 5.2 innings with Brooklyn.

Kingsport (29-28) 5, Greeneville (24-33) 0  Box Score

Kingsport took the first game of the doubleheader by scoring five runs on nine hits. The bottom third of the lineup contributed most offensively, with the 7-8-9 hitters going 5-for-8 with three RBIs and all three of Kingsport’s extra base hits.

Nunez had been much better pitching out of the bullpen coming into Sunday (1.80 ERA as a reliever; 4.38 ERA as a starter), but had his best start of the season as he tossed six scoreless innings. This was the first time in Nunez’s career that he pitched six innings and his nine strikeouts were a season-high.

Greeneville (25-33) 7, Kingsport (29-29) 6  Box Score

Kingsport failed to sweep the doubleheader, but the offense was certainly not at fault in the loss. In seven innings, the Mets had 15 baserunners and were able to push across six runs. Vientos was just 1-for-18 in his last 5 games, but broke out of his mini-slump with a big three hit game. Kelenic is starting to heat up and is hitting .317 over his last 10 games. Interestingly, Kelenic has been much better against lefties (.333/.467/.542) than right handed pitching (.190/.290/.339) so far with Kingsport.

Peden was cruising through the first five innings of the game and actually didn’t allow a single run until there was one out in the sixth inning. Things quickly went downhill after that, with seven runs scoring before the Mets could get the second out of the seventh inning.

 GCL Mets (23-28) vs. GCL Nationals (22-28)

The Mets’ Sunday afternoon game against the Nationals was suspended in the seventh inning due to rain. The score was 6-3 at the time of suspension as the Nationals had just scored five runs in the top of the seventh. The game will be resumed on August 24, the last day of the Gulf Coast League season.
