While the New York Mets do not have many great hitting prospects, they have a potential star in Dominic Smith. Smith was one of the most talented high school position players in the 2013 draft, and he offers a tremendous upside. Smith has the ability to become an excellent hitter, as well as a solid defensive first baseman.
Offensively, Smith has great bat speed, and he possesses plus power potential. He also shows solid plate recognition skills and has a sound approach at the plate. Even though Smith is not a fast runner, scouts believe he has enough range to play first base at a high level. He also has great hands defensively and an outstanding throwing arm.
In his first season as a professional, Smith was very impressive. For the Gulf Coast Mets last year, he hit .301, with three home runs and a .837 OPS. He also exhibited an excellent eye at the plate with just 37 K’s and 26 BB’s in 173 AB’s. At only 18 years old, this kind of performance is extremely encouraging.
Outlook: While Smith is only in the low minors, it is hard to not get excited about him. Smith is clearly the most talented prospect the Mets have on this list. Not only does he have a high upside, but he is also an advanced player for his age. Given his advanced skill set, Smith can quickly work his way up the Mets system.
