1. Zack Wheeler, RHP

Status: Neutral

After throwing six scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves to get his first MLB win despite five walks, Wheeler showed us his mortal side this week in Chicago against the White Sox. He allowed four runs on four hits, three walks, and one strikeout in 5.1 innings pitched. Why only one strikeout? The top prospect said he was throwing “bad strikes.” He’ll look to bounce back in his first home start on Sunday against the Nationals in Flushing.

2. Travis d’Arnaud, C

Status: Injured

d’Arnaud is still in Port St. Lucie, continuing to rehab from a fractured left foot that has kept him sidelined since the middle of April. He started a running progression last week, but we haven’t heard any new developments in his progression toward getting back on the field. In 36 at-bats with Las Vegas before getting injured, d’Arnaud was hitting .250/.429/.472 with one home run and eight RBIs this season.

3. Noah Syndergaard, RHP

Status: Hot

After being the winner in the FSL All-Star game thanks to a scoreless fourth inning, Syndergaard got the good news that he was getting promoted to Double-A Binghamton. He was thrown right into the fire on June 23rd against the Erie SeaWolves, and he shined while earning the victory. The right-hander allowed two runs while scattering five hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts over six innings pitched. He’ll be taking the mound again tomorrow in the first game of a doubleheader against the Trenton Thunder at NYSEG Park.

4. Rafael Montero, RHP

Status: Cold

Since getting promoted to be a permanent member of the 51s rotation, Montero has begun to show his mortal side, as well. He’s allowed eight earned runs and five walks in his last three starts, which is uncharacteristic compared to the rest of his 2013 season. It came to a head in his last start, which was on June 25th against Salt Lake. Montero allowed four runs on five hits (one home run), three walks, and one strikeout in just three innings pitched. In four total starts with Las Vegas (20 innings pitched), he owns a 4.50 ERA, allowing 24 hits and six walks, compared to 20 strikeouts.

5. Wilmer Flores, INF

Status: Hot

Flores continues to hit in Las Vegas, proving that his bat his ready for the big leagues. He’s hitting .333/.341/.643 over his last ten games, while collecting two home runs, two doubles, and six RBIs. He’s currently riding an eight-game hitting streak, which includes three multi-hit games. The infielder is pacing the 51s with a team-leading 61 RBIs. He’s put together a season line of .311/.348/.510 with nine home runs and 25 doubles.

6. Brandon Nimmo, OF

Status: Cold

Nimmo played a part in last night’s 10-3 for the Sand Gnats, but he’s gone into a major slump over the last week and a half. The outfielder is hitting .175/.277/.225 over his last 10 games, and has struck out 11 times in the last week. This includes four straight multi-strikeout games. After starting hot in April by hitting .322, injuries in May and a slump this month have seen the SAL All-Star’s triple slash drop to .274/.378/.374 with one home run, 21 RBIs, six doubles, and five triples.

7. Domingo Tapia, RHP

Status: Neutral

He didn’t give up as many runs in his start this week, but he’s still walking too many hitters. He threw on June 26th against Palm Beach, and allowed three runs on six hits, three walks, and six strikeouts in five innings pitched. He’s walked 10 hitters in his last three starts, which spans 14.1 innings pitched. Tapia’s 4.7 BB/9 rate is the main reason why he’s completed at least six innings in only three of his 13 starts, and is averaging less than five innings per start this season.

8. Michael Fulmer, RHP

Status: Warming up

Fulmer took what should be his last step in rehab from getting a torn meniscus repaired earlier this spring. He made a start on Tuesday in the GCL, and looked ready for the next level. He scattered three hits and one walk through six shutout innings, while striking out six. The next stop for Fulmer officially is unknown, but one would assume he would be headed to the FSL with St. Lucie. He went 7-6 with a 2.74 ERA, 101 strikeouts, and 38 walks in 108.1 innings pitched for Savannah in 2012.

9. Luis Mateo, RHP

Status: Injured

Mateo’s injury troubles continue; he missed a good portion of April and virtually all of May with an arm injury. He was activated off the disabled list May 30th to start his rehab assignment in Single-A, and he was back on the disabled list within a week. The hurler recently had Tommy John surgery, and is finished for the 2013 season. In four total games (two starts) between St. Lucie and Binghamton, Mateo was 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA in 11.2 innings pitched. He joined the Mets in May 2011 as a non-drafted free agent.

10. Gavin Cecchini, SS

Status: Warming up

Following a slow start in his first few games with the Cyclones, Cecchini is starting to heat up with the bat. He’s enjoyed four multi-hit games this week, raising his season averages to .250/.295/.300. He increased his slugging percentage with his first two extra base hits in 2013: two doubles this week. It’s interesting because he’s hit much better at MCU Park (.412/.444/.471 in 17 at-bats) than he has on the road (.130/.192/.174 in 23 at-bats).
