My Report, Photos From Mets Spring Camp: Part 2

I was back at Mets spring camp for day two of the teams full squad practices in Port Saint Lucie on a hot morning full of Tebow Mania. It was the largest crowd I’ve seen at a workout since coming to the backfields yearly starting in 2015.

There remains a buzz amongst the South Florida fans for all things Mets and all appeared to be in attendance today for workouts which featured more exercises, pitchers throwing to hitters and additional batting practice for the position players, many of whom worked up a sweat wearing hoodies in the 80 degree weather.

I was able to catch a glimpse of Mets top ranked pitching prospect David Peterson, who to my eyes seemed to be in excellent shape. He is a large individual who cut off all his hair he sported last year and I would gather has lost weight from last season in a St. Lucie Mets uniform. I remain intrigued by the lefty who could be in for a rise up the levels and find himself in the Syracuse rotation at some point in 2019.

One of the batting practice sessions I was able to witness was from that of Mets projected starting shortstop Amed Rosario. Amed had a solid session throughout the day which started with a homer off Mets 40-man roster pitcher Drew Gagnon.  I noticed that Rosario hit multiple home runs in batting practice towards right center field. As I’ve stated in last weeks report Rosario is in incredible shape and looks to have packed on more muscle this spring. I’m certainly hoping the natural power is now here to go with his added bulk.

Speaking of power I think its important to note that catcher Travis d’Arnaud is healthy and the ball was exploding off of his bat today. He was hitting with power to all fields, hitting multiple home runs and hitting other hard hit fly balls throughout all his sessions in the cage.

No way I can do a report without mentioning a side arm pitcher today. Reliever prospect Stephen Villines, who was hit by a pitch yesterday in camp, was back out there today showing off his unique delivery, much to the delight of some Mets major leaguers including Michael Conforto. Conforto was overheard by my friend Scot (@scottyc9) talking about the “Frisbee” he was seeing from Villines during the live batting practice session. The numbers from Villines last season certainly warrant a trip to the higher levels in 2019.

Another pitcher I was able to see throw live batting practice sessions was Corey Oswalt. After showing his worth in short spurts with the Mets in 2018 I remain excited about his talent and value as depth in 2019.

Perhaps a forgotten man since the winter of Mets acquisitions is reliever Tyler Bashlor. I remain high on Bashlor, who can still throw upper 90s and is continuing to work on his command and control of his off speed pitches.

Among the catchers who were called on today during the batting practice sessions was Ali Sanchez, another personal favorite of mine. I’m curious to see if Ali can make the leap into the upper minors in 2019 and hit enough to make it the majors in the years ahead lead by his strong defensive skills.

This was my final trip to St. Lucie for workouts. My next trip up will be to attend the first two games of spring training. Please be on the lookout for more posts.
