This morning I traveled to First Data Field to attend the second official day of Mets spring camp workouts.  Even though it was officially camp for pitchers and catchers it was evident that most of the position players were ready to go as well and were part of the morning workouts today. A lot of talent on the field today, with the veterans and established minor leaguers on hand as part of the workouts.

Of note some of the minor leaguers helping out with workout fielding throws from the major league invites included first base prospect Jeremy Vasquez and infielder Luis Carpio. My impression of Carpio visually was that he appears to have bulked up since last season. Please allow me time to share my thoughts, pictures and impressions from camp.

Also of note, pitching prospect Franklyn Kilome, from the Asdrubal Cabrera trade who underwent Tonmy John Surgery, participated in today’s workouts. He was obviously given restrictions including all fielding drills not involving him having to throw while other pitchers were doing so in his group. To the naked eye it’s obvious what Mets could see in him. He is visually one of the tallest pitchers on the field today with a strong body frame.

I wanted to share my thoughts and impressions of what I saw and single out certain players. For example I wanted to share that newly acquired J.D. Davis is as advertised as far as his power.

During batting practice, taking it for what it’s worth, I wanted to point out the sound of the ball off his bat as being explosive and appearing effortless. Also physically strong young man with a big body.

Regarding fitness I feel one theme from camp is how in shape many of the players are, with many appearing to have packed on pounds of muscle, including some of the Mets core players and top prospects.

I would like to single out Andres Gimenez as a young man who has bulked up this offseason and showed a stronger more precise swing today in camp. I noticed a different sound of ball of his bat from his time in a St. Lucie Mets uniform. My impression was that he was making more efforts during batting practice to pull the ball with authority. His swing has always been smooth, but I feel the pop in his bat has become more noticeable along with the added weight and muscle.

I was also intrigued again this year by infield wizard Luis Guillorme. The defense even just in drills speaks for itself. He remains flawless in his hand speed. In the cage I feel as though there waa more effort made for him to work on launch angle and airing out the ball in his swings. He continues some of his natural ability to drive ball towards left center but also balls pulled mostly with lift on every swing.

Amed Rosario looks to be in the best shape I have ever seen him as well. Hes has packed on the weight and body mass since 2016 and continues to show a quick bat in the box. He remains fast in the field with his feet and glove.

Speaking of fitness and shape, Chris Flexen was also shown to be as newly advertised.  He looks a lot slimmer. Even in drills his agility his noticeable.

Peter Alonso, Photo By Ernest Dove

During the position player fielding drills I feel it’s worth noting that Peter Alonso looked confident, showing quickness and not shying away from the ball on grounders.

Infielder T.J. Rivera today worked out at third base alongside Todd Frazier and Jed Lowrie.

Dom Smith, Photo By Ernest Dove

Dominic Smith again this year has shown up in great shape with a great attitude. While signing autographs Dom made it a point to state his appreciation to Mets organization for allowing him this chance again to be in camp and compete and is excited about the overall roster.

Keeping with the theme it’s important to note that Jeff McNeil looked to be in fantastic shape, keeping the added weight and muscle he has packed on in recent years. In batting practice he continued to show a natural ability to hit to all fields.

There was also a welcomed back Dilson Herrera sighting today at camp. He fielding drills from second base today. He continues to have that shirt stocky build and pop in his bat.

Overall it was a fun and positive day at camp. Good crowd was there to cheer on the guys. Always a fun atmosphere for us with friendly staff and security on site. I would recommend to anyone that could to make at least one trip to First Data Field every year to watch a workout.

Here are some pictures taken of all the players. Please enjoy.  LGM.
