Anthony DiComo of MLB.com gave us a thorough draft preview for the New York Mets as we gear up for the 2013 MLB draft this Thursday. While it’s not always guaranteed an impact-type player will fall to the 11th overall pick (which is where the Mets currently reside), but Paul DePodesta shed some light on the depth of talent in this year’s draft:

“There are some guys obviously that we like more than others, but there are definitely 11 guys that we like a lot. In fact, there are more than 11. So going into this year, I think we’re very comfortable with what the outcome is likely to be on June 6. We don’t know the name of the player or the position or anything like that, but we’re going to have a good choice, and we’re going to get someone we like an awful lot.”

It’s encouraging to hear that from DePo, as the Mets have the opportunity to pick up difference-maker, even though they don’t hold a top-10 pick this year.

DiComo reminded us that the Mets had an organizational need for shortstops and catchers at this time last year. To help provide some depth, they selected Gavin Cecchini with their first pick, followed by Purdue catcher Kevin Plawecki with their supplemental first round pick. Since DePodesta and Sandy Alderson took over a few years ago, they’ve done a good job at bringing in talent to rejuvenate the farm system, while trying to get rid of any big weaknesses.

Heading into this year’s draft, the Mets thankfully don’t have any glaring needs, so they’ll be looking to add some quality to either the outfield or infield by selecting a player with some power potential.

While pitching is still viewed as an organizational strength, DiComo pointed out there is always a possibility New York selects a young arm, like Ryne Stanek or Chris Anderson.

It will be interesting to see how the first ten picks shake out on Thursday, and what eventually falls into the hands of the Mets. What we can be sure of is that even if the above players are taken, DePodesta assured us that New York will be selecting a player with a lot of upside, and one fans should be excited about.
