With the Pacific Coast League regular season is coming to a close, the Las Vegas 51s have announced their year-end awards.

T.J. Rivera was given the Mayor’s Trophy. Each year, the Mayor’s Trophy is given to the best player on the 51s as voted on by the fans.

A 2011 undrafted amateur free agent, Rivera certainly earned the award by hitting .347/.388/.508 with 26 doubles, one triple, 11 homers, and 88 RBI in 99 games in his first season with the 51s. Rivera has primarily played third base, but has also played first, second, and left field for the team.

In addition to winning the Mayor’s Trophy, Rivera was a Pacific Coast League All Star, a two time Pacific Coast League Player of the Week (May 16 – 22 & August 1 – 7), and the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for the month of May.

Rivera has played well enough to merit two call-ups to the majors. In 11 games with the Mets, he’s hit .315/.306/.371 with two doubles and three RBI. He split his time fairly evenly between second and third.

Mets 2011 first round pick Brandon Nimmo was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. The Las Vegas 51s center fielder hit .34/.420/.534 with 23 doubles, eight triples, nine homers, and 56 RBI in 87 games. Nimmo is also the reigning Pacific Coast League Player of the Week.

Nimmo’s play in his first year in AAA has merited him a few promotions to the majors. In 20 games for the Mets, he has hit .237/.297/.288 with one homer and five RBI.

Additionally, Nimmo was given the team’s Community Service Award for his participation in charity functions, pregame autograph sessions, and other pre-game events.

Gabriel Ynoa was named the Las Vegas 51s’ Most Valuable Pitcher. The 2009 amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic has gone 11-5 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.367 WHIP in 24 starts in his first season in AAA. Ynoa was also named to the Pacific Coast League All Star team.

Ynoa was called up to the majors, and he made three relief appearances earning his first major league win. With Jacob deGrom possibly missing a start, he is a candidate to be called-up to start in deGrom’s place

The team Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher are selected by the coaching staff which is headed by manager Wally Backman. The Community Service Award is selected by the front office.

Last year’s winners were Travis Taijeron (Mayor’s Trophy), Brandon Allen (Most Valuable Player & Community Service Award), Steven Matz (Most Valuable Pitcher), and Chasen Bradford (Community Service Award).
