Brooklyn 2, Staten Island 0

The Cyclones pitching staff shutout the Staten Island Yankees Monday, 2-0, in a pitcher’s duel that favored Brooklyn. The Cyclones were being no-hit into the seventh innings, but put together four consecutive two-out hits to take the lead. The win puts Brooklyn two games above .500 at 31-29 and keeps them right in the mix of things for a chance at the McNamara division title.

Jared King started the two out rally with a groundball single up the middle that was just out of the reach of Staten Island second baseman Hector CrespoJames Rochefollowed with a single to left field and Alex Sanchez loaded the bases with an infield single. With two strikes, Matt Oberste lined a single up the middle that scored Kingand Roche to give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.

Staten Island pitching dominated Brooklyn’s offense for the first 6.2 innings thanks to a superb performance from Yankees starter David Palladino. Palladino did not allow a hit in his six innings from the mound and retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced. The only Cyclone to reach base against Palladino was James Roche in the bottom of the second inning on a walk.

In his five innings of work, Alvarez allowed no runs, three hits and struck out six. Alvarez struggled with his control at times walking six Yankees. Alvarez had trouble in the third when he loaded the bases on two consecutive walks after a bunt single, but Alvarez then retired Brandon Thomas on an infield fly and struck out Yeicok CalderonJuan UrbinaPaul Paez and Johnny Magliozzi combined to pitch the last four innings to complete the shutout, with Magliozzi recording his sixth save.
