Binghamton 9, Reading 3

The Binghamton Mets scored five runs in the seventh inning and ran away with the series finale, defeating the Reading Fightin Phils, 9-3, on Thursday at FirstEnergy Stadium. All eight position players collected at least one hit in Bighamton’s 14-hit attack.

Reading jumped on Greg Peavey and the B-Mets in the first inning. Zach Collier kicked off the offense by zipping Peavey’s 2-1 offering over the right-field wall for his eighth homer of the season. After consecutive singles put two aboard, Anthony Hewitt hit a sharp groundball to third. Richard Lucas‘ throw to second sailed high and allowed Maikel Franco to score, giving Reading a 2-0 lead.

Lucas made amends for his misplay by leading off the second with a double down the left-field line against Major League rehabbing starter Jonathan Pettibone. Wilfredo Tovar followed with a single and Xorge Carrillo put the B-Mets on the board with a run-producing groundout. Alonzo Harris tied the game with a double to the right-field alley.

Hewitt pushed Reading ahead with an RBI single in the fourth, but the B-Mets responded immediately against Pettibone in the fifth, his final inning of the night. Carrillo started the frame with a single to left, moved from first to third when Harris bounced a single off Pettibone’s foot and came home on sac fly by Danny Muno.

Juan Sosa took over in the sixth and put up a shutout frame before Binghamton unloaded in the seventh. Carrillo got the ball rolling with a bloop double to center. Following a single by Harris, Allan Dykstra lined a pinch-hit, go-ahead single to left, plating Carrillo.

Muno added a bunt single to third and Ceciliani kicked the lead to two with a sac fly. Taijeron delivered the final blow against Sosa by lining a two-run single to left. After Tyler Knigge entered, Tovar capped the inning with an RBI single off the righty.

Hamilton Bennett tossed a perfect seventh and added a quiet eighth after Ceciliani rounded-out Binghamton’s scoring with an RBI triple in the top of the inning. Armando Rodriguez wrapped up the B-Mets 11th rubber match of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Peavey (2-1) collected the win after being lifted for a pinch-hitter in Binghamton’s five-run seventh. After allowing Hewitt’s RBI single in the fourth, the righty capped his night by retiring the final nine batters he faced. Sosa (3-3) was tagged for five runs on five hits in the loss.

The B-Mets (77-47) kick-off a six-day homestand and start a three-game series against the New Britain Rock Cats on Friday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Noah Syndergaard takes the hill against RHP Cole Devries.
