Overview of Mets’ 2021 Minor League Coaching Staffs

Chad Kreuter (Jacob Resnick/Mets Minors)

It’s been a long time since we’ve had the joy of watching and following Minor League Baseball, but the wait is almost over with games scheduled for early May.

All four of the Mets full season affiliates currently have their first game of the 2021 season scheduled for May 4th. The Mets have made quite a few changes over the last few months in the Mets development department including new farm director Kevin Howard. Earlier this month, we covered the Mets overhaul in player development and the new approach towards modern baseball techniques.

Now, let’s take a look at the coaching staffs for 2021:

Triple-A Syracuse Mets (Northeast Division)

Manager: Chad Kreuter – Was slated to manage Syracuse in 2020, this will be fifth year in Mets organization, and he managed the St. Lucie Mets from 2017-2019.
Hitting Coach: Joel Chimelis – His fourth season in the Mets organization, all of them as the Triple-A hitting coach.
Pitching Coach: Mike Cather – Joined the Mets organization in 2019 as the St. Lucie Mets pitching coach. Served as assistant pitching coordinator last year.
Bench Coach: Luis Rivera – Former Mets minor leaguer that has been coaching for them since 2010. Was hitting coach for Columbia Fireflies in 2019.

Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Northeast Division)

Manager: Lorenzo Bundy – Was slated to be the Binghamton manager in 2020, his first with the organization. Most recently managed in the Mexican Winter League and was the hitting coach for Team Mexico in the Olympic qualifiers. Played eight seasons of pro baseball.
Hitting Coach: Bruce Fields – Served as the St. Lucie Mets hitting coach in 2019, his first with the organization. Played 14 seasons of pro ball.
Pitching Coach: Jonathan Hurt – His third season as the Rumble Ponies’ pitching coach and 16th in the Mets minors. Pitched in seven games for the Mets in 1994.
Bench Coach: Joe Raccuia – Returns to the role he was slated for in 2020 to make his Mets organization debut. Was previously the head coach at Radford University for 12 seasons.

High-A Brooklyn Cyclones (North Division)

Manager: Ed Blankmeyer – Was slated for his first season with the organization last year as the Cyclones manager. Spent 24 seasons as the head coach of St. John’s University, he’s the winningest coach in school history at 829-500.
Hitting Coach: Nic Jackson – His first season in the Mets organization after spending the last four years as a pro scout for the Cubs. Briefly played for Binghamton in 2007.
Pitching Coach: Royce Ring – Has been a pitching coach in the Mes system since 2014, he was slated to have that role for the St. Lucie Mets in 2020. Pitched for the Mets big league team in 2005 and 2006.
Bench Coach: Mariano Duncan – Entering his third season with the Mets, he was the Kingsport Mets bench coach in 2019. Played in 12 big league seasons.

Low-A St. Lucie Mets (East Division)

Manager: Reid Brignac – Was slated to make his debut as manager with the Fireflies in 2020 after retiring following the 2018 season. Former second round pick that played in parts of nine big league seasons.
Hitting Coach: Tommy Joseph – It’s the first coaching job for the former big leaguer, he hit 43 home runs for the Phillies from 2016 through 2017.
Pitching Coach: Jerome Williams – Third season in the Mets organization as a coach. He pitched in 236 major league games before retiring in 2018.
Bench Coach: Jay Pecci – Previously worked as the bench coach for the GCL Mets and enters third season with the organization.

Endy Chavez (Jacob Resnick/Mets Minors)

Complex League – Mets Will Have Two Teams in Port St. Lucie

Manager: Robbie Robinson – First season in the Mets organization.
Manager: Chris Newell – Second season in the Mets organization, previously worked as a scout for the Rays and Yankees.
Hitting Coach: Richie Benes – Third season with the Mets, spent 2019 as a hitting coach at the Dominican Academy.
Hitting Coach: Gilbert Gomez – Fourth season as a coach following seven years as a player in their minor leagues.
Pitching Coach: Miguel Bonilla – First season with Mets after spending last two as pitching coach for the GCL Red Sox.
Pitching Coach/coordinator: Carter Capps – Yes, that Carter Capps. Previously worked at Driveline.
Bench Coach: Endy Chavez – The Catch, enough said.
Bench Coach: Ender Chavez – Played in the minors with the Mets, has been a coach in the system for a decade, and the younger brother of Endy.

DSL Mets1 

Manager: Manny Martinez – Enters seventh season as DSL Mets manager and has been a coach with the Mets since 2010.
Hitting Coach: Leo Hernandez – Played three seasons in Mets minors and begins his 24th year as a coach in the system.
Pitching Coach: Christian Martinez – Second season as pitching coach with DSL Mets. Pitched in 135 big league games.

DSL Mets2

Manager: Yucarybert De La Cruz – Former Mets minor leaguer enters his fourth season as the DSL Mets2 manager.
Hitting Coach: Eduardo Nunez – Not the recent big leaguer, this Eduardo Nunez was a teammate of Mets manager Luis Rojas in the Expos minor leagues.
Pitching Coach: Victor Ramos – Third season as a coach in the Mets system.

And yes, Phil Regan is still in the Mets organization, he will serve as the senior advisor of pitching development. He was a big league All-Star in 1966.
