Binghamton Rumble Ponies starter P.J. Conlon was named the Eastern League’s Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 7, 2017. This marks the second straight year Conlon has been named a pitcher of the week. Last year, Conlon was named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week.
Conlon earned the award this week by pitching a gem on Saturday. It was the first shutout of Conlon’s career with him pitching a one-hitter over seven innings in the second game of a double header. The southpaw who has shown tremendous control in his career struck out nine while walking just one batter.
The start could be a good sign of things to come for Conlon. Entering this season, Conlon never had an ERA above 1.84 on any level. Through his first five starts of the season, Conlon had a 4.21 ERA. Saturday’s gem lowered his ERA down to 3.31. If Conlon continues pitching this well, his ERA will go back down near where it usually is.
This is Conlon’s real challenge right now. And he’s adjusting bc he’s not a flame thrower. I like his grit though, he’d be a good gamer at the end of the rotation or an ace LH reliever from bullpen. I wince a little thinking about how the Las Vegas air would treat his soft stuff.
