It was a good week for the Mets minor league system as the organization had three separate players who took home Player of the Week Awards for the week ending July 23rd.
Binghamton Rumble Ponies starter P.J. Conlon was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.
Over the past week, Conlon pitched 13.1 innings over two starts going 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA, 0.900 WHIP, and a 13:3 K/BB ratio. These stats included a three hit seven inning complete game shut out.
This is Conlon’s second Pitcher of the Week Award this year (May 7th) and the third of his career.
St. Lucie Mets first baseman Peter Alonso was named the Florida State League Player of the Week.
Over the past week, Alonso hit .300/.364/.800 with three doubles, four homers, eight RBI, and two HBP. He reached base in every game last week, and he had at least one extra base hit in five of the seven games. The highlight of the week was his two home run game on July 20th.
This was Alonso’s second Player of the Week Award this season (June 25th). It’s also the second of his professional career.
Kingsport Mets outfielder Dionis Paulino was named the Appalachian League Player of the Week.
Over the past week, Paulino played five games hitting .524/.565/.962 with three doubles, two homers, and six RBI. Paulino got at least one hit in all five games played, got an extra base hit in four of the five games, and had three separate three hit games. Paulino also hit his first two homers in the United States.
This is the first time Paulino was named a Player of the Week in his career.
Congrats Flexen going to Flushing. Hopefully Oswalt and McGowan next.
Flexen had a leg up bc he was already on 40 man roster so they didn’t have to take someone off for it. I think McGowen gets the call 1st bc I don’t know how much more they can live with Salas. I hope he turns it around but I doubt it.
I agree – if they cant dump Salas for a marginal prospect then it is only a matter of time before he gets released and McGowan comes up. Oswalt will be a Rule 5 decision so we probably wont see him in September.
Oswalt saved himself with this season. I figured he would be a Rule 5 casualty before this season
Rule 5 status won’t hold him back. In past years when the Mets were not contending, Sandy has, in fact, called up players whom he’d already determined he would protect anyway. The thing that will keep Oswalt from a call-up will be his innings totals and limits. He’s never thrown more than 128 and he threw only 68 last year (95 if you include AFL innings).
He’s currently on pace to go 133, plus playoffs if they make it.
LOL.. saved himself from what? Being taken by another team who wants him more? Rule 5 benefits the player. It doesn’t make him a casualty.
Saved himself from losing a roster spot. his numbers were pedestrian up to this season. Yeah he would get picked up. Didn’t mean for it to sound like his livelihood is on the line here. But now instead of having a ceiling of AAAA player he could possibly be a Major League pitcher.
Saved him self from losing WHAT roster spot? He’s not eligible for minor league free agency yet. So nothing would have changed for him. If he gets picked up in Rule 5, he has a roster spot with the other org. If he doesn’t, he remains Mets property and still has a roster spot here. Either way, he’s still a minor leaguer, and he’s still pursuing better things.
And his ceiling hasn’t changed, either. Only your perception of it. The Mets liked him before this season. Thats why they sent him to AFL last fall, and thats why he went up to AA despite last year’s pedestrian numbers.
