Underappreciated relief prospect Paul Sewald finds himself pitching in the Mexican Winter League as he hopes to continue to impress Mets brass. He could also be looking to showcase his skills for other teams too as he’s eligible for the Rule 5 draft and has yet to be added to the Mets 40-man roster to protect him.

Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth inning last night for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo to pick up the save in their 3-2 victory over Yaquis de Obregon in both teams first game of the season. Sewald allowed leadoff double to Joey Wendle who would move to third base after a sac bunt. Sewald then struck out Carlos Valencia and got K.C. Hobson to ground out to close out the victory.

Hermosillo took a first inning lead thanks to a solo home run by former Met Eric Young Jr. Braves young speedster Mallex Smith is also on the talented Hermosillo roster.

Mets left-handed pitching prospect Jose Carlos Medina pitched one inning for the Tomateros de Culiacan last night. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out two and let all three inherited runners score. One of the outs he got was a popup from former Met prospect Lastings Milledge who went 2 for 6 with three runs scored in the game.

Mets catching prospect Xorge Carrillo is playing in the Mexican League as well and went 0 for 3 on Tuesday night for the Aguilas de Mexicali.

The Venezuelan winter league is underway without any Mets players involved in the four games last night.
