pedro-felicianoPedro Feliciano has been promoted from Advanced-A St. Lucie to Double-A Binghamton, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Perpetual Pedro appeared in 10 spring training games for the Mets, compiling a 1.59 ERA in 5.2 innings pitched. Despite pitching effectively, the Mets asked Feliciano to accept a minor league assignment in order to increase his pitch velocity. The left-hander had the choice to opt-out of his contract, but decided to take the assignment and stay with the organization.

He’s appeared in five games with the St. Lucie Mets (4.2 innings pitched) this season, but has been dealing with a serious form of food poisoning, which has sidelined him since May 3rd. If he’s able to get back on the mound and Tim Byrdak stays on track to return to the big leagues next month, the Mets will have two veteran left-handers on their hands before the non-waiver trade deadline.

Perpetual Pedro got his nickname because he was used what seemed like every day from 2008-2010 with the Mets…kind of like Scott Rice this season. Felciano tallied 86, 88, and 92 appearances in each of those three seasons, the last one being a franchise record. As of right now, Rice is on pace to break that record.

He left the Mets organization following 2010 for a two-year/$8 million contract to go across town and join the New York Yankees, but arm issues prevented him from ever taking the mound in the major leagues. Yankees GM Brian Cashman blamed the Mets during the spring for their overuse and abuse of Feliciano’s left arm.
