Lyn Worthy of the Shreve Port Times writes that newcomers to the B-Mets, catcher Kevin Plawecki and outfielder Dustin Lawley, will be counted on to lead the Binghamton offense.

Plawecki, 23, who was signed by the Mets in the 1st round of the 2012 Amateur Draft, is entering his third season in the Mets system. Plawecki is ranked #8 on the Mets Top Prospect list and also was the 2013 co-winner of the Mets Sterling Minor League Player of The Year award.

In 2013, he split time between Savannah (A) and St. Lucie (A+) and batted .309/.390/.448, with 38 doubles, eight home runs and 80 RBI’s in 449 at bats.

“I just try and see a good pitch and hit it, no matter what the count is,” Plawecki tells Worthy. “I just try to get myself in a good hitter’s count to begin with. If I’m in control of the count, I feel like I can put a good swing on the ball. I wouldn’t say I’m on a contact hitter, but I’d definitely say I put the ball in play a little bit more, I guess, than other guys, the numbers would show.”

Lawley, 24, who was signed by the Mets in the 19th round of the 2011 Amateur draft,  is entering his fourth season in the Mets system. He won the 2013 Florida State League Player of the League award, when he hit 25 home runs and drove in 92 RBI’s with the St. Lucie Mets.

In 2013, he started the season with St. Lucie and ended the year with Las Vegas (AAA), when he was promoted to help the 51’s in their playoff run.  In 128 games between the two teams he batted .262/.314/.513, with 35 doubles, 26 home runs, and 96 RBI’s in 489 at bats.

“Last year, I played starting at High-A and then I got called up to Triple-A,” Lawley shares with the Shreve Port Times. “When I was up there, I was up there for a like a week or two weeks and did the same thing up there. Honestly, I keep it simple. I think it’s all the same game everywhere you go. They throw the ball over the plate, and you’ve got to hit it. You know? I just keep it simple.”

The B-Mets will have players with a lot of experience and Manager Pedro Lopez hopes that what looks like a winner will actually turn into one.

“Looking at the team we’ve got on paper, it actually kind of looks better than the one we had last year,” Lopez said. “I just hope the guys show up every day and give the fans what they deserve.”

The B-Mets open their 2014 Eastern League Season at home tonight when they face the Akron Rubber Ducks (CLE), at NYSEG Stadium, with first pitch at 6:35 PM.
