Coming into the 2014 season, there were some question marks as to who would make up the Mets five-man rotation as well as the bullpen, and with so many quality arms on the spring roster, it is tough at this point to predict who will break camp with the club. But two pitchers today made cases for themselves and even though it’s only the first game of the spring, this is when a pitcher makes his case for a bid to make the team.

Earlier today Rafael Montero started the spring season for the Mets with a two inning, no hit, no run, two strikeout performance. The next pitcher didn’t disappoint as Jacob deGrom had his own solid appearance by also throwing two innings, striking out four, and not giving up a run nor a hit.

In 2013, deGrom pitched with St. Lucie (A+), Binghamton (AA), and Las Vegas (AAA) and combined he was 7-7, a 4.51 ERA, 120 strikeouts in 147.2 innings.

Today’s solid start between Montero and deGrom is good news, not only for the organization, but also for two top pitching prospects expected to make an impact to the pitching staff something this summer.

Baseball is back and the Mets had Rafael Montero on the mound to throw the first pitch of the Grapefruit league season today against the Washington Nationals at Tradition Field.

Montero, who played with Las Vegas (AAA) in 2013 and went 5-4, with a 3.05 ERA, 78 strikeouts, and 88.2 innings in 16 starts, brought his A game to today’s spring training opener and didn’t disappoint.

While facing the minimum six batters, the right hander didn’t give up any runs or hits, while striking out two, in two innings of work.

A good start to what is supposed to be a promising year for the 23 year old top pitching prospect. Lets Go Mets!
